Is a copper spacer necessary for mounting HSF's onto cpu's? what do they do exactly? sorry I know i have another stupid thread going in this forum.. just too many questions..

Oh.. and if you use them, do you decrease your chances of cracking the core? since you create a sort of level for the thing? 😱
 
They increase stability, reducing the risk of cracking the core. Of course, if you're careful and do it properly, the risk is minimal. I ordered one for my PIII, but didn't use it. I have installed and reinstalled the HSF many times and haven't damaged it yet. 🙂 I also installed a T-Bird 900. I did about as bad a job as possible (shaky hands 😱), but no damage done. Just be careful and do it right the first time, and you'll be fine. There is a good guide to mounting a heatsink on a socket chip, but I can't remember the url. I'm sure someone will post it.
