it's kinda like a safety net....

if you're afraid of crushing your core, use one... just be careful when installing your sk6 and you should be fine... so it's kinda like an insurance policy for your cpu... if you're confident with your hsf mounting skills then no biggy... i dont use one :D

I never installed one before, but it didn't look that hard. Just stick it on and don't tilt it or twist it. Do you think I should get one?

You don't need one, but anytime your core is exposed on top of the cpu it's in danger if mishandled by accident.
I've been thinking about using a shim myself, but I'm going to go without one right now cause most of the places that I deal with don't have shims so I would have a high shipping charge.

It's your call whether you feel safe putting your hsf on and not putting too much pressure to your chip. Good luck.

I've got one but I wouldn't really recommend them, they can cause more problems than they solve - if you mount them incorrectly or if you put thermal paste on them (some people do!) you could destroy your CPU.

Just take your time when mounting your HSF and you should be fine.

I only recommend them if you watercool or if your heatsink does not attach via a clip onto the sides of the socket.

I am using one now and won't go without using one. I bought a Duron brand new and after a month or so I got to noticeing it had chips and nicks in the corners of the core for no reason. I had always put the heatsink on right. Since then I started using a shim and have never had any damage done to my Athlon since I got it(and thats after taking the heatsink off multiple times). I recommend one.

Why take the chance on cracking the core and ruining a $100 CPU when you can buy a $5 shim that will prevent that.
