Cop vs. Skateboarders

Possibly NSFW, since there are a few utterings of the four-letter variety.

Cliffs: kids were skateboarding why they weren't allowed. One kid mouths off a bit, then cop goes on massive powertrip. I guess the question is did he go too far? Far enough?

someone explain to me why I should care about a bunch of mouthy douchebags in San Francisco that aren't able to mind their own business? I seem to be missing the part where I'm outraged by the cop's actions. Unless I should be outraged by the cop's refusal to pistol whip the whiny guy who kept talking about the cop kicking this little brat, in which case I agree, I am outraged.

It looks like less of a power trip and more of two assholes (the dude who got arrested and the chick off camera) who need to learn how to shut up. From the sound of it, he was just going to tell them to take off, then wonder boy ran his mouth.

And here are the SF/CA laws

Video isn't loading for me for some reason. I have been amazed since I started skating at the nasty looks some people will give you just for skating down the sidewalk. Some people (mostly old people) just seem to have a problem with skaters, even when we're just rolling down the road, as if my mode of transport makes me a bad person.

The cop was being a dick during the first arrest but he seemed pretty logical/calm later. He definitely was having a power trip.

Skateboarding should not be a crime. That cop has better things to do than hassle skateboarders.

When skateboarders (don't assume I'm generalizing) end up damaging property from all their grinding, it costs companies unnecessary time and resources to repair. Skateboarders who do so are, basically, petty vandals with absolutely no concern or respect for other people's property --or anyone but themselves, for that matter.

That's why anti-skateboarding laws exist: to prevent vandalism.

That being said, doesn't the cop have something more important to do, like fighting real crime?

I'm sure they caught the kids walking across their lawn.

RE: skating not being a crime, the thing that most people overlook is that skaters cause massive amounts of damage to spots they're using.

DISCLAIMER: I skated for about 12 years so I've been on the other side of the fence.

I never understood why people (cops especially) hated us so much until I got older. It's because we waxed up curbs and rails and slid/ground them till they were worn in, blackened, and FUBAR. That, coupled with fear of injuries/insurance cases, makes people even more wary.

I don't really see how the cop is in the wrong. He probably came there just to tell them to go away.

Cop was being a douche and the skaters were being whiny little bitches.

But I also agree with Godless at how stupid the level of reaction against skateboarding is in many places. There aren't such huge restrictions on rollerblades, bicycles, unicycles, or scooters. The reason these laws are in place is probably because skateboarding is popular with younger people who may sometimes be idiots, either hurting themselves or others or damaging property when they try to do tricks. But dangerous or destructive tricks can also be performed with BMX bikes, rollerblades, etc.

It's just the sign of an over-legislated society. California has a law for everything. They don't stop at banning the skateboarding stunts that probably prompted the creation of these laws in the first place. They have to go the extra mile and ban skateboards entirely.

I think what needs to happen is that long skateboards need to become popular as a mode of transportation. Once some older people start using skateboards they might un-ban them.

Seems reasonable enough to me. He was just going to give a warning, and then everyone starts acting like assholes and the cop escalates accordingly. No one gets kicked, beaten, tasered, etc.

that's exactly what i gathered. some punk thought he'd be cool by fightin the man, but instead go put in a nice little arm lock instead (aikido technique called ikyo.. very commonly taught to LEOs). joint locks are incredibly painful and are an easy way to subdue people if you can do them properly.

Since when does his being a smartass justify physical brutality? There was no need to restrain the guy.
