Cop runs down woman with truck.

Dog Blamed for Hitting Woman With Truck

OGDEN, Utah - A police dog that was left in a pickup with the engine running apparently knocked the vehicle into gear and ran down a woman who was walking to her mailbox.

Mary F. Stone, 41, was expected to remain hospitalized with a fractured pelvis and tailbone until at least Friday, said her husband, Paul Stone.

The dog, a German shepherd named Ranger, had been left in the truck while its handler responded to a domestic disturbance call Tuesday, police Lt. Loring Draper said. The truck's engine was on so Ranger would have air conditioning.

Draper said Ranger must have hit the shift on the steering column, putting the automatic transmission into gear. As the truck slowly rolled forward, police officers yelled to Stone, but she couldn't get out of the way in time, he said.

A front and rear tire ran over her. "She had tire marks on her clothes," her husband said.

The truck then went through the Stones' yard and struck a vehicle in the driveway.

Draper said police were trying to determine if there might have been some malfunction that would have allowed the gear shift to be moved easily.

So the dog managed to hit the button and move the stick?

I'm guessing he fell against it then. Just plain unlucky for the woman.

Don't you need to press the brake to move the gear from P to D?

That's exactly what I was thinking. Weird.

NTB - Unfortunately a hilarious way of putting it. Sad story, though. 🙁

No button on a column shifter.

That's what they get for using a German dog. Shoulda gone with the all-American Pit Bull

I think they should use Chiwawas. They have a good bark, are not big enough to hit the brake and the shift stick at the same time and it would be safer for everybody. Once the bad guy is ROFL, he could be easily taken into custody. You could also mount a remote controlled tazer on the dog and fire it if the bad guy has no sense of humor.

No button on a column shifter.

Even on a column shifter you still need to pull it towards you and then pull down to shift. Still even if it was shifted in D the car isn't going that fast unless it was going down a hill.

How fast was the truck going? I mean, if i put my car into gear with no brakes, it ain't going that fast...
wouldn't it suck if the police yelling at her to move, actually made her freeze in her tracks? you know, kinda stunned when officers are yelling at you and you're not sure what to do, because they usually tell you to "FREEZE!". man, that'd be ironic.

I was actually imagining an old woman being too stupid to run to the side, out of the way. Instead, she was pushing along her stroller away from the car like indiana jones running away from the boulder but much slower.

Not the first time I've heard a story like this, unfortunately. I used to work for a company that sold power wheelchairs (the big tank-looking things with all the bells and whistles) and repaired ones that people already had. One of our drivers picked one up one day that was completely beat to hell, and it took me a while to figure out what happened. Turned out a cop (the person, not his dog) plowed into her with his patrol car, I guess while she was trying to cross the road or something. I don't think I ever did get the whole story.

Nate
