Hot off the press: I got this in response to an email I sent to the DA that quoted the stats in the OP's article. I didn't figure I'd get a response at all.
Dear Mr. <My Last Name>:
The statistical information re: police officers killed in the line of duty that was mentioned in the press release contained a verbal miscommunication between the NYPD and the prosecutor on the case. The sentence should have read "... 425 were killed with a handgun," not "with this handgun." The sentence has been pulled from the release.
Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention
