I'm in the process of trying to determine what it the best method to cool a p4 prescott 2.4a that I'm planning on buying but also keeping it budget friendly. I really don't have much money to work with so I'm trying to keep my overclocking to a moderate level as well as my costs.

According to what I have read here and there about this processor I'm planning on buying (link here) that some overclocking has been done to reach 3.4ghz speeds with stock hsf from the retail box. I'm wondering if anyone out there says no against this and thinks that it is better not go with the stock hsf and use an alternate such as this one by Zalman. I'm not planning on pushing the processor beyond that 3.4ghz mark and will primarily be playing fps games and not a whole heck of more.

Bottom line do you think the stock hsf that comes with the retail processor will be sufficient or should i seriously consider an outside cooling source even if it means another 40+ dollars?

Thanks.

I'd seriously consider getting a 2.4C or 2.6C with a good motherboard. You'll have a higher FSB and HyperThreading.

Go for the Zalman cooler. I have a 2.8C overclocked to 3.6, and it keeps my system @ 53C under load (on an ABIT over-temper). Easy to install, looks great, quiet. You will need something better than the stock cooler, or you will be getting temps in the upper 60's/lower 70's under load. My temps dropped ~15C @ load after installing a Zalman over the stock HSF.

BTW.....I'm pretty sure you get one for closer to $30, another advantage of a Zalman, much cheaper than paying $52+ (plus fan) for an SP94.

Thanks guys. I've been doing some looking around and I also came across 3 products by Cooler Master : Jet 4(ICB-V83), Aero 4(ISB-V73), Aero Lite(DI4-7J74F). Well the reviews I've read seem to indicate they work really well somewhere on the level of the Zalman I was looking at above but according to all the literature they state they work with "Intel P4 3.6 GHz and Higher". Since I'm still planning on using the Intel P4 2.4A I just was wondering if it would fit. I don't see why not? After all its still a the same socket type P4 / 478 so it should, right?

Sorry for the noob'ish questions, thanks again.

Sh*t, don't expect more than a 200MHz overclock without getting rediculous load temps. I have a 2.8GHz and I'm grounded at 3027MHz on a 216MHz FSB. If you start to idle in the 40's then that' s too high because I've seen load temps during a P95 session jump 20C. I have a heart attack in the 60's and I try to stay away from the 50's.

I'm using AS Ceramique and a SLK947U with a 92mm fan for cooling.
