Cooling options...GC68 or Volcano 7

A couple of cooling questions.

1. Which processor runs hotter, a 1.2 thunderbird or a 1600 xp?

2. Which heat sink will cool the best, a GC68 with a panflo L1a or a Volcano 7 with a panflo L1a?

Lot of people have hitting XP1600+ with GC68 @ 170FSB.

I'd keep the the fan that comes with it though. ITs quite enough already.

I already own the panflo L1a's and both processors. But only the volcano 7 heatsink. The GC68 will be arriving as soon as svcompucycle gets them in stock. I'm just trying to decide which heatsink to use with witch proccessor. I don't know if i will overclock or not. I will not be using ddr memory and so far I haven't found any good overclocking guide for the 1600 xp using regular sdram. The t-bird will not be overclocked at all as I will need the computer it is going in to be as quiet as possible. It will be in a HTPC.

Yeah svcompucycle and case-mod are both out of stock. I can't justify only ordering the hsf from newegg...I should probably call svcompucycle for an eta.

use the panaflos as case fans and keep the gc68 fan on the heatsink. You'll get the best performance/ratio with such combo.

GC-68 Should be popping back instock within a few days....the backorder was straight through the manufacturer =/.

Electronics4Life, if you end up calling compucycle let us know of the ETA. I'm waiting also but I don't need to call them just yet (I'm patient).

I have both coolers and both cpus.
Hotter: TBird and GC68
Go with a HSF a notch up from both for overclocking the 1600+. Either HSF will be fine if you run @ proper speed.
I had my 1600+ running 180 FSB synch with Corsair XMS2700 on my kt3ae board with the Thermalright ax-7 HS and 50 CFM Sunon (from SVC).
Got it backed down to 133/166 asynch now and my temps stay 39-44 C. Love the ax-7!

Just saw your followup post so disregard OC advice- go with the Volcano 7 (quieter and cooler for stock speeds).

I just got the Arctic Cooling Super Silent TC from SVC. I really like it. It is very easy to install. The 3 lug clip is great. You just push on the top part and latch the bottom. It is also damn quiet and varies its speed to the heatsink temp (it's pretty responsive).
Using 8K5A2+ socket thermistor 1600+ at 1.75 V it is 50 degrees running 1500 RPM.
If I undervolt to 1.6V, it runs only at 1100 RPM and the temp drops to 47 or so.
These temps are idle (just installed W2k). I actually think the fan is quieter (or at least as quiet as the panaflo, but I don't have RPM monitoring on the panaflo).

I don't have enough experience with it to really give two thumbs up, but I do have a GC68 (though I didn't use it on this CPU). I thought the fan was quiet, but louder than this setup. I also thought the GC68 was a pain/impossible to install without removing the fan.
For the price, you can't beat the GC68, but I would bet this is quieter than the Volcano 7 and still do a reasonable job on the 1600+ at stock speed. With these 1st impressions, I'd definitely get this HSF over the other two.

Me and Shinsa were the 1st to hype the Gc68 around here. I still love them. Unfortunately, SVC was out of stock last week and I am building a rig for friend and cant wait, so I am trying the Artic cooling one at 3xs the price. I would go for the Gc68 if you can wait for them to be in stock.
I like 'em a lot.

For those of you looking for one of these, the GC68 (GC118) is in stock here
I ordered and received mine in 3 days. $7.50 + $4.75 priority mail shipping.
Darn site quieter than that volcano 6cu+ !!!😀

Would a gc68 fit on a celeron 800. I am unsure of the package type of the intel products. Why I ask is I would like to order from somewhere else that has one in stock. And when I get the backordered unit from svcompucycle, I could then use it on my Girlfriends noisy hsf with a 60mm fan.

Dynatron heatsink from SVC

Looks pretty good with its fine fins. Anyone know how it compares to the GC68?

Remember, its a 60mm fan. So generally speaking, it'll be noisier than a GC68 if it wants to put out a simmilar amount of CFM.

I just got off the phone with SVCompucycle.com and they told me that the GC68 is on backorder and they expect more BY THE END OF THE MONTH! What the heck, I ordered them at the beginning of the month. Oh well. Looks like I'll have to wait.

I just got off the phone with svcompucyle, Canceled my order. New order already made with nexfan. Nexfan had very similar prices and actually cheaper prices on the thumb screws I wanted. I just hope they have good customer service.
