Cooling my Stock E3-1230?

Hi Folks,

I just build a straight-forward stock (no OC) E3-1230 with the retail CPU fan in a Lian Li K62

But during my first days, running Prime95, My CPU temps are peaking over 90.
Idle, I'm mid 30s.

The ASRock board is pumping the CPU fan to max when the temp goes this high-I've been keeping an eye on CPUID.

Should I be worrying? What questions should I be asking?
I haven't assembled since CPU fans went to the pre-applied thermal paste, so do I need tyo give it some burn-in time or what?

Haswell does get pretty hot. You could always go for an aftermarket cooler like the Hyper 212 Evo.

Interesting combination of parts- how come you picked a Geforce 460? That's getting pretty old!

Yeah, I just ordered a 212+. We'll see how that works

The 460 (and the other parts marked 'purchased' are transplants from the last rig. The GPU might be the next upgrade.

I wouldn't worry about it. TJmax is like 105, right? Replacing the thermal pad with nice thermal paste wouldn't hurt and would probably get you a degree or two.

Prime95 and Intels burn-in utility are the only things that will ever get your CPU that toasty. What temps do you get when encoding in Handbrake or other "normal" tasks that use 100% of your CPU?

I got confused for a moment there. The E3-1230 is a Sandy Bridge part. The designation for Haswell is E3-1230v3. Sorry for the nitpick...

Well, I'm asking if I should be worried. I had a hard time finding guidance for operating temps on the internet. It throttles at 100.

I'll install the 212+ and keep an eye on it during normal operation.

I don't think those temps are at all wrong for a fully loaded Haswell i7 equivalent under a stock heatsink.

That is a good price for that 7970 ... AMD ATI gurus must jump on that deal. gl

The 212+ got me down to sub-70C peak for Prime 95. That's about 30C better.

The 7970 was DOA.
