Cooling down a linux box

I got an old amd 1700+ that im gonna turn into a linux box soon. Only thing is the heatsink and chipset fans are shot. Its a gigabyte board a 7d series. Pretty old school, i think.

I just picked up a 40mm fan of Newegg, but didnt know that it would be 25mm thick! Anyone know where i can pick up long screws so that i can mount the thing?

As for the heatsink, i cant seem to get it off. I've been really careful trying to pry it off, but that metal bard that runs across and that attaches to the board, wont seem to come off no matter how i try. Any suggestions, and can anyone recommend a good cpu heatsink for the CPU. Is it true that any Socket A will fit?

Thanks
