Just hooked up a new Onkyo RC-360....have plenty of room above it and I keep the door to the cabinet open when I use it (the back is open)...but was wondering if there is any benefit to some active cooling for the receiver..

Just do like my parents, stuff that cabinet with junk close it all up and surround it with more junk...

Then blame it on whoever built the stuff. Corse if they arent family you may not be able to guilt trip them into replacing it for you.

Pretty much and cheap power supply you have lying can be spliced onto a 120mm fan and just set it on the top of the receiver blowing upward.

I have done this many times and it works great. To bad your receiver doesn't have a switched power outlet on the back.

This doesn't help as much if the whole cabinet has no ventilation, in that case you would be better served trying to make some ventilation holes somewhere and mount the fan to exhaust the hot air. Don't buy anything for 80$ when you could make it from stuff you most likely have laying around. And if you aren't having issues with it anything shutting off I wouldn't worry to much.

It really depends on how hot the room is and how hard you push the amplifier. Use the system like you normally would and then place your wrist on the top, if it is uncomfortable to you then adding a fan would extend the life of the equipment. Realize that the parts used are likely fets and they can withstand 70C + temps easily. I have modified receivers in the past adding internal fans but I don't recommend that for the novice. You can also get small 120vac fans that will plug into any outlet really cheap. The benefit of an AC fan over a pc fan is they are very easy to control the speed. Use any light dimmer.

Connected to dimmer like this:

I like that solution. Simple.

if you have a cabinet, just install 2 fans your self, one on top sucks air out, one on the bottom pushes air in.

PS whatever you do, do not search for cool devices.

The Antec unit you linked just has two flat blower fans that pull air up and push it out the back. It has two speeds. I wouldn't recommend it.

There are several ebay sellers that specialize in various configurations of 120v fans made specifically for media cabinets. I'd look at those setups first. If you get something with a temperature control it will be set-and-forget.

if you have a receiver or a ps3 or something with usb slots that power off when the device turns off you could maybe use one of these
120mm
http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mo...8217722&sr=8-2

80mm
http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mo...8217722&sr=8-1

and cut a hole somewhere in the cabinet to vent (attaching one of these fans) or leave the cabinet open or whatever
mostly the purchase is to get the computer fan to usb connector though, which i dunno if you can buy elsewhere seperately heh
the fans provided are pretty darn quiet and the fan to usb connector will work with most fans running under the max usb power draw for when the fans need replacing (antec tricools, etc should work)

//this is similar to modelworks idea except powered by usb, so potentially not as much airflow, but with some advantages as well, primarily not having to turn off and on the fan//
