Hi everyone, this is my first post as a new member, thanks for your help...

Here is my problem:
I bought a cpu/mobo combo at frys:)P)
I bought an el-cheepo "ATT copper cooler(heatsink and fan)" by the recomendation of the salesperson

I installed RH(redhat) and was running it fine, and then I realized when my computer booted, the cpu ran at 1800 instead of 2400, so I changed the jumper settings, and it ran at 2400.
After running for a few mins, the computer started crapping out, I got kernel errors and crc errors, even when I tried booting from a cd.

So I changed it back to 1800 and now its running fine, but my operation temp is 47deg C.

Do I need a new HS and fan? is that even the problem?

if I do need a HS and fan, what do you guys recomend on a budget(maybe 30$)?
what would be the best if I wanted to overclock the cpu a bit(again on a budget)?

thanks a lot, I appreciate your help,
Drey

Your temps are within specs. Don't worry!

Edit: what are your temps running it at 2400? Is your board capable of 266 fsb or 333 fsb? What bus are you running to get it to shut down? What thermal paste are you using? Those temps are ok for the processor at 2400 but shaky for an 1800.

the 47deg is running it as 1800, at 2400, its ~57deg, and then it starts locking up. My mobo is a K7VTA3, 333FSB, and on the motherboard i am changing it from "CPU Frequency" of 100Mhz to 133Mhz(I dont know the correlaction between FSB and this CPU Frequency setting)
I'm using the paste that came with the copper cooler(SIL more?)

I am almost positive I should replace the fan/heatsink, i paid 18$ for it at frys, and for that I'm sure I can get a much better fan/HS... any recomends?

First of all I would try to reinstall the heatsink fan, it's quite easy to make a mistake and have way too much thermal paste, or have the heatsink not sitting on the CPU die properly.

here are instructions for a very popular brand of thermal paste, while here has a detailed guide for tattatching the actual heatsink. Dont worry if your brand of paste isnt the same, installation for all paste is the same. If you have a thermal pad though (waxy-chewing gum like stuff pre-installed on the base of the heatsink) then bear in mind you'd have to completely clean that off before using paste, and you cannot re-use a pad.

btw if you're 2400+ is anything like mine it should be running at FSB of 133 and multiplier of 15, (2000mhz, give or take a few mhz).

If you want to get a better heatsink fan, a suggestion is Thermalright SK7 heatsink with a Panaflo L1A fan. Very good heatsink and nice n quiet, reliable fan, though make sure to look up the instructions for it online or you'll sit wondering what the white sticky dots are for, then hear a expensive crunch when clipping down the 'sink. Thermaltake Silent Boost might be a cheaper and more widely avilable (and a bit noisier, but still not bad, and poissibly easier to install) alternative.

Thanks! now that I think about it, I may have put too much paste on the processor.

DaveGod: what is your temp? just curious...

42C... at 1.7v, overclocked in a warm room

temps really arent comparable between different mobo's, different cases (and same cases with different fans) and even different locations - or wether the heating is on :p In an hour I wont be surprised if it says 36C, ditto if I just go clean my dust filters...

Most likely your Power Supply not supplying enough 5 volt rail power.
