Coolest Linux Distro ever: Knoppix Diskless SETI?

This is cooler than hell. I am posting using this right now. Basicly, it is a Linux distro that runs from a bootable CD and will auto detect all your hardware upon loading the kernal. No hard drive needed! And you can run it with as little as 16 megs of memory 9 for text ) or 96 for KDE.

Just download and burn to a CD.

It does nto use the hard drive at all, so it is perfect for learning linux ( what I amusing it for ) Maybe someone can figure out how to use it to setup a diskless seti system?

If this is not new, feel free to shoot me 🙂

linky Make sure to get the english version. When it loads, you will get a login that says "Boot:" There, type, "knoppix lang=us" or you will have to learn German 😀

Ok, then this can be used for diagnosing your SETI machine anfer your little brother or son nukes a NTFS disk 😀

You're askin' the wrong d00d man 😱 i know VERY little about linux & don't participate in SETI, but I know I've seen mention of such a distro.

What's special about an NTFS disk?

Sounds like a very clever way to run seti on a machine without detection for relatively short periods of time.

Yes, there is a floppy based Linux that runs SETI. The original version is here, and I should be posting my own version soon that also does FTP backups (for if your computers go down a lot.) The problem with it is that it only runs the statically compiled version of SETI. And even if this doesn't work for me, I know a friend who would really get a kick out of a Linux for SETI in German. 🙂

Edit: Now I see it's not set up for SETI yet. 🙁 This may actually be the CD my friend (who is from Germany) showed me.

The FreeSCO-SETI Cruncher🙂

This is the one I use. It works great with the cheap network cards I buy and it works with the ECS K7sem board that is dirt cheap.

On a similar note, I have a Windows XP OPK (OEM Preinstallation Kit) cd at work. This CD boots up into a shell Windows XP operating system, with storage drivers, including external USB hard drives and zip drives. There is netwrok support as well, but I haven't configured it yet. I think it will work without a hard drive - haven't tried it yet. Its a pretty decent operating system overall...And it gives you a bootable CD to copy over files from an NTFS drive. This CD is now my emergancy disk for computers at work that won't boot - I copy over important files onto an external USB drive.
