That is an ignorant statement. (Note, I do not mean to do any personal attacks here.)
Iron maiden sings without "destroying their vocal cords". Also, they don't do "fast but really lame guitar riffs". the "fast but really lame" guitar rifs are performed by "nu-metal" which is utter crap. Real metal bands play "fast but really cool" guitar riffs.
Now Death Metal bands of the 90s up to current .. they are the ones that destroy their vocal cords. They are most awesome.
My vote for coolest 80s band would have to go to Death as they started up the entire Death Metal subgenre. They took metal to the next level. They played at 11.
Though I also think Maiden, Exodus, Slayer, Overkill, Kreator, and Manowar each are "coolest" in their own right. However, technically, you can say Maiden was a 70's band since they formed in 79, but that's just details, especially since they releaesed most of their best stuff in the 80s.
Not so, oh unenlightened one. November Rain is off from the Use You Illusion disk(s) and that Heaven's Door remake is played quite often (GnR Lies?)

Depends on where you live I suppose. Around here the classic rock station will play Dylan's Knockin' on Heavens Door (as they should), and I've never heard November Rain on the radio but the video was quite popular for a time. The only song I can think of off the top of my head is Civil War, that gets some play time on the new rock station.
Edit for your Patience edit... I still don't hear that one on the radio. Again, probably just different stations playing different stuff

Are we talking about bands that didn't really exist before the 80's? Because I kind of feel like putting The Talking Heads here, but I'm not sure if they qualify.

I am gonna say NKOTB just to piss someone off since I don't think anything really substantially different came out in the 80's; pop was pop, metal is always metal, and rock was most changed in the early 90's. Anyway, someone will probably say Im wrong, which is fine since I didn't think about it enough.
