Coolermaster hyper212+ overhyped or user error?

This thing is not living up to the hype. I have it mounted with some artic silver thermal paste with push/pull fan config and it's great at stock speeds and maybe up to 3.0 ghz but that's it. Was all the great reviews a crock? Has anyone else had success with this thing? If so what'd do? I have two 3000 rpm fans I could use but I'm not wanting to use them because of the noise. It's on a i7 920 D0 with fan that came with it and additional 40cfm fan. What about lapping it? Never done that before but if it would help I'd try it if I could get some directions on how to do it.

My Core i5/750 hits 71c under LinX at 3.8 GHz with the 212P (single stock fan), I suspect the 212P may not have quite enough oomph to handle a 920 at full tilt.

I could be wrong though...is your case any good at getting rid of hot air?

It's not the best in the world, but it should keep you under temps.

What are the load temps you're seeing at 3ghz?
Tried it with your case side off to eliminate case airflow as an issue?
Tried remounting it with more or less thermal paste?

Seems like almost all of the HDT coolers have a fairly low "breaking point" where if the temp is below that they're phenomenal, but once you exceed it the temps ramp up incredibly fast.

It's in a coolermaster atcs 840 case so airflow isn't an issue. I read up some more and it seems that there is a special method for applying thermal paste on hdt coolers. I'm gonna try it when I get home.

All the reviews made it seem like this thing was a megahalems. Pisses me off because I don't mind spending $65 for a megahalems but I figured if I can almost get nearly the same performance from the 212+ then I'll go with it. Now it looks like I'm gonna have to buy a megahalems too if the temps don't get under control.

It's the best bang for your buck.
I have mine set up in a push/pull config with the fan that came with it and this one: http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=2916

At 4.0Ghz, 1.3875V, my i5-750 runs 67C load with Prime 95; at 3.7Ghz, 1.325V, 60C load with Prime 95 and 65C with LinX.

The channels between the mounting base and the heat pipes on this cooler are deep and should be filled in with TIM first.
TIM application on HDT coolers:

when i first installed i was having issues as well. I could hit 4.0 in a 750 but was getting 80 degrees with short P95 blends.

After i read this guide and resat my HT it dropped my temps down by 10 degrees. I put fans in push/pull and noticed only 3ish degrees drop so seating the heat sink right is the most importantl.

that being said i wish i had bought the megahalems or a nocturnal

Yeah I reset the heatsink (according to guide) and put in some high speed fans (2000 and 3000 rpm) in push pull and it works alot better. I'm at 3.8ghz with turbo and hyperthreading on. Now I just have to get it dialed in.

have had same kind of issue with ccf's and vendetta2's, they just don't seem to go on just right sometimes... i just swapped around some parts and got a v2 that wasn't performing well with a 9550 stuck on just right (maybe the mobo?) but it's now keeping the 9550 cool at 4ghz when it never would before... same fan and case... just have to try again sometimes it seems...

I got the hyper 212+ for $23 and have had great results. Compared to the temps on my stock Phenom II cooler it dropped nearly 15C under load.

I don't know what reviews you read but this thing is probably 10+C off mega in a 4ghz i7 920. but it shoudl still cool well at 3,5 range for an i7. I use one for a x4 620, it even cools about 4C better than vendetta 2 which is itself not too shabby. I think you need to reseat it or maybe you are not applying TC correctly for a DHT.
