Have put together Athlon based system in this case -- MB is Chaintech VNF4 Ultra. Everthing is running smooth with the on board AC97 audio driver if I use the speaker sockets on the back panel. The front ones dont work.

Any suggestions on how to go about debugging this?

stupid question...did you hook up the front sockets? and by that I mean attach the cables to the corresponding connectors on your motherboard?
 
Yes I did, and I double checked too -- although that was at 3 am in the morning when I was setting up my system and was damn sleepy. So may have missed or connected it in a wrong way.

Will again go over it tonight, but I doubt that is the problem.
