Earthwatts is a better PSU.

the reviews of almost all cooler master's i've read on newegg sound pretty bad. these could just be bias... but... ya...

it's something to think about.

TP Trio is even better than Earthwatts, but there are confirmed reports about no POST with some P35 boards. I got my TP Trio 430 at the local Fry's B&M for $10 AR. +12VDC rail drops 0.02V under Orthos large mode with E4300 @ 3.49GHz (1.465Vcore).

i find the cm goes better with a slightly fruity chianti, but with a dry pinot the ew is certainly superior...

it's a free psu... i've been using one since the last time it was freeish (about 6 mo ago) with no problems w/x2/7950/couple drives... but i'm a cheepo...

that second review is kind of cute... "...i didn't have a multimeter..." i think jonnyguru would use that guy to block the vents on the case to heat up the psu...

Earthwatts has better electronics...80% efficiency vs 75% for CM. Unless you're pushing the rig above 300 watts (highly unlikely) there is no need to go with the CM. I've noticed that the CM's fan can be hit or miss in term of quality.

i own this.

everything is awesome EXCEPT for one thing.

It's a tad loud. not silent at all.

powers
AMD 4000+ 2.85ghz OC w/ freezer pro

You could upgrade to a quieter fan. This is a common issue with these CM units. I prefer quality over quantity since my rig will never crack the 270 watts barrier. Don't need the extra power of the CM, but I will always benefit with the +80% efficient PSU.

jonnyGURU felt the CM550 was better than the ea380, so I am happy to get the CM600 for $8.22 after rebate.

Someone said that the CM is a 375 PSU under normal use. I don't have an Earthwatts 380, but its close relative TP Trio 430 is rated up to 384 watts @ 12VDC with 50C 24/7 operation. Based on my visual examination of the internal components, I would say 320 to 350 watts/12VDC is a more realistic number.

Better as in it offers more usable power, but you also get a handful of cons.

EarthWatts = EW

1) Not as efficient and no PFC (EW @ 80+ & has Active PFC)
2) Rated output @ 30C (EW @ 50C)
3) 2 yr. warranty (EW @ 3 yr.)
4) Voltage regulation not as good
5) Not really a 600W psu, lack of UL and combined wattage on label and website

Horrible review. His "testing" involves using Motherboard Monitor and gives it a 9/10.

Regardless, this is a good psu for $8 and does qualify as a hot deal. 😛

For 8.22$ you can easily open up the unit and replace the fan. I opened up my CM 650w extreme power to replace the fan, and now it's a pretty good PSU. For the money it costed anyways ...

I got 2 of these from the prior CompUSA deal.

One of them died after 2 weeks (powering my E6750 rig) and took 2 SATA drives, mb, and SATA DVD burner with it.

I am using the 2nd one as a doorstop.

Hope you all have better luck.

http://www.jonnyguru.com/PSU/eXtremePower600W/

It's a 500W rated at 25°C with a de-rating curve of -1W per +1°C. In other words, it can only do about 350W to 375W inside a computer.

As John pointed out, it doesn't have APFC. Efficiency is decent < 75% load and if you don't crossload the unit.

It's all in the review.

jonnyGuru, I don't think this is the same PSU you reviewed. This one actually comes with PCI-e connectors, at least the ones I have. I recall in the prior thread on this PSU that there was a way to tell which revision was which by the model number. Do you have any info/insight on that? I'll try to dig up that old thread info...

And secondly, would you feel more comfortable running your rig with this PSU or an Antec Earthwatts 430W for $22 after MIR and PP?

Looks the same to me. It doesn't take much to slap a PCI-e connector on a unit.

The "old" version I reviewed, Cooler Master screwed up and gave this 500W power supply a 500W part number. You'll note that the "new" version actually has a 600W part number on it. Doesn't change the fact that it's still a 500W.

NEITHER is not an option? 😉 This one is free, so I'd go with this one if someone had a gun to my head. 😀

If they were the same price?

I'd go with the Antec EA because wasn't it determined that those were rated at 50ºC? So at normal operating temperatures the Antec would be capable of putting out more power, plus at higher efficiency.

This is because the 12V rails dropped like the panties on a $2 whore. If this power supply was hooked up to a PC and not an ATE, it would have locked up like the chastity belt on a baptist minister's daughter.

 Wasn't the first time I read it, and wasn't the first time I laughed.

jonnyGURU,

So what would you go with to power an e6750 gaming rig (nothing fancy - no RAID, X1950GT video card), something like a Corsair 520HX?
