Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus alternative?

Since Maximum PC's rave reviews of this cooler, it seems that certain sites have cranked the price up (alot) or are out of stock for months. The cooler can still be had for 30$, but I feel its drying up.

My question is, should I go for Hyper 212 Plus for 30$ or is there a alternative better cooler still for 30$. I like the 30$ price point. I also like the fact that I can take the Hyper 212Plus, put it in my 775 rig now and when I get around to AM3, it'll work fine there too, saving me money on my new CPU.

Suitable equivalent or better for the same price that anyone knows of? The Hyper 212 Plus has been criticized for its louder fan, maybe something that would do better in this arena?

Also, is there any news on AMD's next CPU project and whether it will change socket types?

Thanks.

The only two coolers that come to mind that cool as well or better than the Hyper 212+ would be the Scythe Mugen 2 (better cooling, but huge and apparently a pain to mount) and maybe the Cogage True Spirit. Both of those are closer to $40 than $30 though.

if you can go $40, the Zalman performa is incredible at that price point.

CM Hyper 212+ for $30 w/FS. I think it's still the best value.

http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-...5688183&sr=8-1

Looks like it's out of stock at Amazon too. That's where I bought it for $29 back in January. But given how unavailable it is now, I wouldn't hesitate to get a different cooler. Frankly, if this article had been written before I bought mine: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/lga-1156-heatsink,2535.html
...I would have bought a Thermalright Mux-120: http://www.coolerguys.com/840556091585.html?productid=840556091585&channelid=FROOG

Cooler and quieter than the Hyper212, and at this point, it's also less expensive (oddly).

The only two that I can think of off the top of my mind are the Scythe Mugen 2 and the Gelid Tranquilo. I think both have already been mentioned.

Maybe give Cooler Master's own Geminii a try? (never even seen it before).

I believe AMD's newest CPU will be the Bulldozer, and there have been people saying that Bulldozer will support AM3, so take that for what its worth.

Well, it was showing as In Stock when I linked it. ;)

Just based on FrostyTech, but the Thermaltake Contac 29 is almost the same price (here it is cheaper by ~$6 locally) and performs very similarly. It looks like the Hyper212+ and also comes with mounting for an additional fan if you desire. Like the Hyper212+, it also supports all current sockets for AMD and Intel.

Link. I have no idea why the price is estimated at $35 dollars though. Taking into account currency conversion, it sells here for about $27 - $30 only, slightly cheaper than a Hyper212+.

Yep, the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus, I thought I had snagged....back ordered.

So checking out the Thermaltake Contac 29, as low speed settings the Contac actually performs better across the board, noise and temp than the Hyper 212 Plus for the same exact price.

My question is running a low fan speed appropriate? I don't really "want" noise, but I'm looking for a better cooler than the stock Dual Core Intel. I'm looking to squeeze 200 more Mhz out of my E2160, which now runs at 70C full load and 45C at idle. Could I do this, with the Contac on "low" settings?

EDIT: Uhg, according to maxiumum pc the Contac 29 has "bad" rubber pins for the fan, and the intel heatsink mount method, which I've never been very good at. Hmmmm

Screw it. I impulse bought a Mugen 2. The thing is a beast and it only turned out to be 3$ more than a Contac or 212 Plus shipped. I don't think I'll regret my purchase.

Should still be better than stock heatsink, but probably not by much. At the very least, probably no worse.

As to overclocking more, I can not say, but this would certainly be a great step up from the stock cooler, so I wouldn't be too negative about it, but only if it is at high setting.

As for noise, even the Hyper 212+ is already quiet. I can't hear it, unless I put my ears very near my case to try to actually hear it. The Thermaltake Contac 29 is supposed to be a wee bit quieter. It is my personal opinion that running it on high fan will not bother you with its noise - unless of course, you are one of the SPCR elite, in which case I will have nothing to recommend.

If you don't get too frustrated mounting it, the Mugen 2 will cool better than any other cooler at or near it's price point, so I'm guessing you'll be pretty happy with it (as long as you don't have to take it off and put it back on several times).
