So after blowing half a grand on awesome new bookshelves and a receiver, I started to feel that my system was too loud and was messing up the soundstage (quiet left, noisy right). After a lot of searching, I found this POS that had the best reviews among my limited local options. This was to replace the stock Antec 120mm fan in my SLK1650B, which is rated at about 25db and 1600rpm. Well, looking at the price and rating of 22db with 1250rpm, how could I go wrong?

What a POS. The Antec had a swooshing noise fan that is pretty normal (think CPU or 7600gt at a lower level). This new POS sounds a muffled vacuum cleaner; I actually got up and asked if someone was vacuuming downstairs after the initial start up. Mind you, it is quieter, but the droning noise is 10x more annoying + noticable, so there goes $13 (bought at mom & pop, no refunds). Now I'm contemplating writing this thing off and going back to my old Antec now. Also, I tested the noise by stopping the fan (push fan head) and unplugging it: both cases, noise went away. Looks like volt modding it would be extremely easy, but I don't have the balls to gamble a grand for a $13 fan.

The hilarious thing is that I managed to nearly silence the CPU fan by putting cardboard over a side-fan grill, which was messing up airflow and letting noise escape. Concluded this from dust pattern in case, seems like the rear fan was just sucking everything in from this empty side-grill near the back of the case. There was virtually no dust near the front.

**Stay away from this crappy fan.

Edit: **The fan was defective, but not by much. The noise is still there, just not as loud.

I own about a half-dozen of these fans, some blue - some green. I think you might have just gotten a bad fan, all of the Coolermaster fans I have are greatly superior to the stock fans that came with my Antec case. Maybe soft mounting it would help?

Possibly. I contacted Cooler Master about this, and they have offered to RMA it. Responded within a few hours, so 1 up for them. However, I will try taking it back to the store first since I should have 7 days. This sounds about right though, cause I saw way too many happy people for it to be crappy. Will unhook system again.

Coolermaster is a great company and their products are usually the best...

I won a few S-12 120mm blue LED fans and they are ultra quiet!

You must've got a defective unit, I had to replace my CM fans because they were moving too less air so they were damned quiet.

Ok. Now that my head's out of my as* from rage, it definately seems like a poorly lubed sleeve bearing. All the other fans I hear are the whooshing of air from the blades. The whooshing is very quiet from this CM fan, but the accompanying noise is somewhat of a grind. Hope the store won't scam me as I don't want to ship this thing across the continent to California ($10+). Oh, and please no one tell me to peel the sticker back and put a dab of motor oil on the bearing...

The Cooler Masters do have excessive motor whine. I own two of them. However, I have gotten used to the noise and undervolt the exhaust one to 1100RPM or so. Running both at a full 1220RPM gets to be annoying. If it's not damaging your hearing, stop complaining and get some headphones.

Well, running a real vacuum cleaner a few feet away doesn't damage hearing, so let's all break out our Dirt Devils!

On a serious note: the store let me exchange it no questions asked. Took a while longer because I tried soft mounting it (cardboard "washers" between fan and case) ~thank you natethegreat for the idea. However, got off to a false start because the fan wouldn't start up while the LEDs did. Upon reopening case, turned out a small piece of tape, when cutting the "washer" mounts, got stuck to the fan, jamming one of the blades :roll:. Luckily I checked to see if it was spinning, just hope I didn't screw up the motor. Anyways, the replacement is a LOT quieter, but the vacuum sound is still there, just to a lesser extent. The softmounting seems to have reduced some of the vibration. It is still the loudest one in my system though.

Extra note: Both fans had the same manufacturing date 3-15-06, so it may be a crappier batch.

I got mine all the way back in late 2005 so yours could possibly a bad batch. You should also try removing fan grills to reduce the wind noise. I got a few of those simple wire grills that maximize airflow and reduce noise. You should give them a try.

I've checked out the grill thing, but I really don't want to deface the case. Although, it doesn't sound like wind noise. The old Antec was definately wind and motor, but it is all motor right now. It might work, but considering my system doesn't get hot anyways (everything sub-50 under heavy load), I could just go for a really low RPM fan in the future (Scythe?). Also, I've noticed that this fan is blowing a lot less air than the noisier one (feel). My VC also went up 2/3 degrees idle while HDD, CPU and MB are the same as before. Rethinking the $13 thing, I've wasted a lot more than that on clothes I'll never touch again, so I'll just give these a longer try.
