That's practically a famous video. It's been passed around quite a number of times. I feel sorry for those people in the front row!

hehe... never thought of it that way: F-14 "breaking wind" LOL

i always thought those pictures were fake!

what exactly is going on there? are we seeing the atmosphere turn opaque? or is that some kind of exhaust?

I thought that there would be some serious damage from the sonic boom for people and objects that close. That's the reason they give for not breaking the barrier at air shows.

Either way, that was totally cool.

B52

B52 crash :( Some of you may remember it when it happened. Hot dog pilot decided to pull this stunt after his crew complained several times about his flying habits.

that second video in the first post of this thread is amazing. geez like 4 feet higher and he could have probably saved that. were there 2 pilots for that? are those ejection seats rocket guided? like does it change the angle of the thrust depending how the plane is facing? or is it just a straight shot out? looked pretty cool seeing them eject. seemed to me like the chairs guided them as far away from the plane given the angle they were facing. hope everyone was alright

Ejection seats throw you straight up through the cockpit, then forward and away as far as those little propellant things can push. No, they're not "guided" at all. If the plane were upside down, the seats would have rocketed into the ground. You get shot forward in anticipation of the tail of the plane coming up on you quickly as if the plane were moving quickly. In the vid, it's almost an illusion that the seats guide the pilots :) Ever seen ejection vids? The pilots don't go up through the cockpit and straight back as the plane rockets forward... they seem to shoot straight up.

yup, and something i found out that was unaware of is that the b52 does have ejection seats...out the bottom! how crazy is that.

lol... the white circular cloud-like stuff is moisture in the air getting compressed by the shock wave... it forms every time (assuming there is enough moisture in the air) a jet passes the speed barrier.

not all B-52 seats go out the bottom. the B-52 has two decks. the pilots and gunner are in the upper deck and they go out the top. the lower deck (bomb/nav) have seats that blow out the bottom.

The weirdest aspect of this is the historical context. Just three days before the crash, Airman First Class Dean Mellberg, who had just been discharged from the Air Force for personality disorders, stormed into the Fairchild AFB hospital with an AK-47 and shot 23 people, killing five. The Wing Commander decided not to cancel the air show scheduled for the following weekend in the interest of showing that the base would not permit a lone wacko to deter them from business as usual.

The B-52 went down in an airshow rehearsal, killing, as I recall, five O-5s and O-6s, including the Vice Wing Commander (who was there to keep an eye on the pilot, Lt Col Arthur Holland, who had a history of dangerous hot-dog flying). I believe the Wing Commander was court-martialed for permitting Lt Col Holland to continue to fly after a number of near-crashes caused by reckless flying. An old boss of mine was the Staff Judge Advocate at Fairchild at the time; that had to be a hell of a week . . .
