Cool things to do in San Fran?

Hi everyone, I'm heading down (from Oregon) to San Fran this weekend with a buddy of mine and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what to do. My friend is going because some old friends of his are getting together there. He asked me if I want to go and I couldn't pass up a nearly free trip down to the Bay Area. Any suggestions of cool things to do? Aside from the touristy things like Alcatraz and the like... I lived in Vallejo (a ferry ride away from SF) 10 years ago but I was only 12 so I never really got to check out SF on my own. I'm 21 now so clubs and bars are totally fair game too!

LMK,
Andy

Use the public transportation everywhere. The rail pass is a great deal. The cable cars are tons of fun to ride too.
I went to SF a couple weeks ago. Check this stuff out:

- Haight Street. Very artsy neighborhood. Awesome Victorian houses plus great eclectic cafes and shops.
- Pier 39. There's like 600 sea lions that live there right off the pier. They're so much fun to watch.
- Fisherman's wharf. Very touristy area but still very San Francisco.
- Ghirardelli Square. Neat shops, Ghirardelli store.
- Golden Gate Bridge. Enough said.
- Sony Metreon (didnt have time to go but I hear its fun!)
- Lots of good bars in the Financial District
- Go to Chinatown one morning for some great Dim Sum

Most tourists have been to Alcatraz but few of them have been there at night. Take the night tour. It's a whole different world. The Lincoln Museum (not about Lincoln) is also a good place for a dusk visit.

Well, for a bit of goofing off, check out the Exploratorium, set by the Palace of Fine Arts, in Golden Gate Park. Pier 39, Ghirredelli Square, Ripley's Museum, Wax Museum, those are the touristy things. Coit Tower, Angel Island as well as Alcatraz, go walk along the Marina. Dunno what you want recommended, if you're not interested in the touristy stuff.

Make sure to pick up some of the delicious sourdough bread there- a true San Francisco treat. Oh yeah, and point and laugh at all the gay left wing hippies.

Rotating restaurant = Equinox.

Expensive food . . . but it circles every 20 min's and you get a full view of the city.

Wow thanks for the replies... Oh yeah! the Exploratorium! I remember going there in elementary school. Pier 39, the Wharf and Ghiradelli Square are cool for sure. I definately want to check out Metreon...I don't know about the leather pants on Castro though...;)

The Union Square. Shops, huge malls, and kinda reminds me of NY. Theres some clubs there too by the way.

Don't take advice from a red-neck idiot on what to do in San Fran.

If you do go to the Metreon you can easily walk from there through Union Square and into China Town. Lots to see in that stretch.

The Swishes there aren't hippies. They all look like Lance Bass ,you know, with short spiked hair that is tinted. In fact they kind of look like the Average ATOTer. The Long Haired dudes are either intellectuals, Bikers or well rounded Hetrosexuals like me:).

I forgot to mention

Ghiradelli Square... Not only for the chocalte, but Cobbs comedy club is right there. A great place with only a two drink minimum

Tickets are 15 a pop plus the drinks. It's a great comdey club. There is a restaurant attached to it...some seafood place, and if you eat there, you get reservations for the comedy club and choice seating.
