It couldn't have been around too long...it was taken from the space station. I said satellite in the original post because technically, the space station is a satellite.

Ok, now check out xplanet. It takes an image like the one you posted (but of the whole planet) and another taken during the day, along with an hourly download of cloud cover and generates a 'real time' image of the planet from a certain vantage point. Very very cool.

This is old but very cool. I remember seeing debates over whether or not this was a real sattelite pic, or just a regular sattelite pic with the lights laid over it
