The Boeing plane was actually nicknamed "Monica" because it was so ugly and had a big "mouth". Didn't catch the special, but I have seen a lot of stuff on the JSF program (being a Lockheed employee you hear about it every so often).

I think the main reason that Lockheed won was not because they didn't want Boeing to own everything but that the Lockheed JSF was able to demonstrate a working model that could do vertical takeoff. The Boeing model could not ... That and I believe Lockheed met most (if not all) of its milestones on time on the project while Boeing did not (IIRC Boeing missed a lot of key milestones during the testing of the planes).

And of course, I think looks played a bit of a role too :)

---

I was flipping back and forth between that and 24. Very interesting. Anyone know what you need to do to be able to work on a project like that? Obviously you need some degree in Aerospace Engineering, but do you need a PhD, Masters, Bachelors, military experience, what?

Also to answer your question, depending on what part of the JSF project you want to work on, you could potentially work there with just a Bachelor's in CompSci and the proper clearances. I know I was offered the chance to work on the project if I wanted to move to Ft. Worth, TX or Marietta, GA (didn't want to move to either place) ... If you want to actually design the physical plane, you'd probably need some sortof PhD in Physics and probably some seniority at the company you worked for. Anyways, good luck if you want to pursue a career in the defense industry! :)

The Lockheed plane does look better.
The Boeing team did try to innovate in the design of their plane. One piece delta wing, thermo plastic skins.
Ultimately it was their inability to decide on a final design early enough to tweak it into shape that cost them the contract.
IIRC the only milestone the Boeing plane missed on time was air-to-air refueling.
Who ever designed the frontend of the X32 needs to be taken out and shot. Looks like a freaking large mouth bass.

Looks don't matter worth a CRAP guys. If the boeing plane could fly circles around the Lockheed plane, who cares what it looks like?

I did like the Lockheed vertical take off and landing method better than boeing's. That fan is crazy, and it does well to prevent hot air ingestion.

From what I remember, the Lockheed plane was able to do vertical takeoff by the milestone date (I remember because I watched the video of it doing so) ... but the Boeing plane at the time was not able to do so. I could be wrong though, I didn't keep track of the JSF program very carefully.

And silverpig, I think most people know that looks don't really matter ... I know at Lockheed it was just a big joke because the Boeing plane really does look pretty ugly.
