Nova is showing a special called "Battle of the X Planes" right now. If you are curious about the new Joint Strike Fighter or how is was developed, you might want to watch this.

I just watched it. Very well done and sometimes even intense. Competition once again brought out the best of both companies.

One thing they should have mentioned, though. I think the gov't was hesitant to give Boeing the contract, because doing so would leave Lockheed without much business in a down economy. It would suck for everyone to have both commercial and military aviation industries controlled by one company.

I was flipping back and forth between that and 24. Very interesting. Anyone know what you need to do to be able to work on a project like that? Obviously you need some degree in Aerospace Engineering, but do you need a PhD, Masters, Bachelors, military experience, what?

Exactly what happened to McDonnel-Douglas when Lockheed won the F-22 competition.
That was one glaring error in the show. One anylyst said this was the first time there has been a head to head competition of prototypes.
The F-22 beat out the F-23 during flight test because the F-23 left a visible contrail on the trailing wing in high G turns.

Yeah, they're really going to need those planes to deal with the threat of the future...gorilla warfare. <sarcasm mode now off>

What else could we mock Canada and France with if we don't continue to innovate?

Think they would be interested in our remaing fleet of f-4s?

It looked like the Boeing prototypes were rushed, and the bugs that popped up during testing really hurt their chances. Lockheed probably "sealed the deal" with their final presentation of the plane going supersonic and landing vertically in one test, because the Boeing vehicle couldn't go vertical without weight reduction modifications.

WTF those planes can hover!!! It looks soooooo weird to see the plane just hovering there in mid-air like a helicopter.

(btw, I know the harrier (sp?) can do it, but it's British technology :p)

Looks like Doc brought some technology back from the future ;)
