I clean installed XP 32 bit pro, and I enabled the cool n quiet K8 option in my BIOS, installed the ASUS cool n quiet drivers, and even the cool n quiet app, set my settings power mangement to "minimal power management" and i still can't get cool n quiet to activate itself, any ideas?

with my sli-dr i needed to set vcore to auto and use the special vcore to increase the volts. if i used 1.4 cool n quiet wouldn't work. so i need to use auto + 110% special to get my 1.54v for oc.

Cool 'n Quiet is great, although it won't work properly if your overclocking.

Check here:
Control Panel>Power Management>AMDs Cool'nQuiet Technology>Performance:Automatic Mode

It needs to be set to "Automatic" rather than "Performance" for Cool 'n Quiet to work.

No problem with CnQ and an overclocked AMD 64 3000. I'd flash to the latest BIOS. Clear the CMOS. Install CnQ. Then enable CnQ by switching to Minimal Power Management. Check with CPUz to verify that CnQ is working when running Prime95 @ max heat mode. If okay, then go into BIOS to overclock the PC, and retest.

I know that AMD has a program for CnQ. Not sure if you HAVE to install the "Asus CnQ". Normally, there's an option in the BIOS to enable CnQ. Then you go into windows to install the AMD CnQ driver.

Don't use a windows utility software to overclock in windows. Always modify in BIOS.

well thanks for trying to help, however that is for win2k/9x/me users only. im on xp pro+sp2.

as for the other replies, thanks for your help again.. however, i've tried everything, even flashing my bios to 1005 revision. haven't tried clearing it yet though. but it's a pain to reach down there and do, any other suggestions?

when you are not maxing out your cpu it runs it at a slower speed, somwhere around 60%.

on a good board (like the a8n-e) they usually have some sort of auto fan throttling too, so you fans will spin down at lower temps.

my a8n-e with 3000+ winchester, runs at 1000mhz or so when i am just browsing the web, so then the fans spin slow and its much quieter.

yeah, i mean i hear a small difference, but unfortunately i've got like a bunch of naturally loud fans in my existing case, i haven't moved to a 120mm case yet.

How did you exactly enable Cool&Quiet? I downloaded the amd zip file and don't know what to do with it? Do I need to run it within the command box? What do I type in there?

Thanks
Hazen

you should be able tojust run the setup in it and it will replace the driver for the cpu in the device manager with an amd supplied one.

then you change your power management to minimal power management and it should just work automatically.

you can see if its working by right clicking my computer and checking your speed when your computer is idle, my 1800mhz 3000+ runs at like 1000mhz usually .
