How many research-oriented sites are aesthetically palatable? If you're looking for such content it's usually for mental candy (hmm), not eye candy. Look at MIT's sites for example; I think even Sparta would be offended by its simplicity.

BTW: I've used this concept before in website architectures and on my desktop with shell replacements like Talisman. I didn't like it. Personally I'd prefer just plain old text links and whatnot rather than even the current iconic method.

I realize that most research pages aren't particularly great looking, but it just seems funnier coming from MS than, say, a university.
