link (Sun's LookingGlass reminded me of this)

edit: to watch the video, use the link in the second sentence or left menu. The first one doesn't work.

It's funny how bad the MS research web page looks :)

I'm downloading the video now.

The page looks like it was done with Frontpage and uses a default design theme too. I guess if you're that into research and development, you don't care about your presentation as much as your end result though.

How many research-oriented sites are aesthetically palatable? If you're looking for such content it's usually for mental candy (hmm), not eye candy. Look at MIT's sites for example; I think even Sparta would be offended by its simplicity.

On second glance, this is also from 1999 which is going on 5 years ago too.

I realize that most research pages aren't particularly great looking, but it just seems funnier coming from MS than, say, a university.

First Microsoft dumbs down the Windows GUI by making it look as though it were manufactured by Fisher Price with a wallpaper that looks like a screen cap of a Teletubbies episode and appropriately entitled "Bliss."

Now they want us to interface with our files and programs by moving around virtual doll houses.

Hmmm, I wonder if Bill Gates is really Captain Kangaroo in disguise....

BTW: I've used this concept before in website architectures and on my desktop with shell replacements like Talisman. I didn't like it. Personally I'd prefer just plain old text links and whatnot rather than even the current iconic method.

Read the research. They're not catering to the intuitions of computer pundits; rather, those who do not understand (nor do they care) about learning the idioms of GUIs. The more a computer feels like an extension of the way your mind works the better. A lot of people have to enlist in significant mental gymnastics just to use a computer, and some simply never catch on. It's hard to fathom for most of us, but look where we are discussing this. I wouldn't like it, but if cognitive psychologists say that people will find this more intuitive, I'm inclined to believe them.

there's a reason it's called "research" and not "product development"

well, a lot of the people working for MS research would have been working in academia... so it's not that different.

I remember Packard Bell packaging their computer with this. I had this stupid little thing where you could go into a room and pick whatever you wanted to play as well as going into the Windows 3.1 shell.

Good grief both the page and the desktop are awful. It's like walking around in a Quake3 mod to access My Documents, etc. :(
