it is not running cool any ideas??? Just put my first computer together, it is running fine (no lockups or anything) but the various temp utilities are giving me temps of 60-65c and system temps of 45-50c, seems high for what I've been reading around here.

Gigabyte 7VRXP
XP 1800+ w/ retail heatsink
AS3
TT Copper Shim
This Case (CS-003-01WB)

Any ideas???

Thanks,

Well, the retail heat sink really doesn't do the chip justice. Personaly I would recommend getting another heatsink and using Artic silver compund which would bring your temp down considerably and quiet your system. Get a heasink with an 80mm fan, allows mass airflow at half the noise, (make sure the fan is a panaflow or something along the lines of it). Something like this and a good quiet fan!

I have the same board and chip (not retail) and I'm pretty sure this thing registers temps a little high.

I left the case open with power off for about 2 hours and fired it up and went directly to the bios. The case temp was about 6 degrees (celcius) higher than the room temp.

That said, I'm running at 46 on idle and 52 at full load (cpu) with a thermaltake volcano 7 hsf attached.

My friends XP 1800 ran at almost 60 under full load (in a crappy case) for a while with no problems whatsoever, no crashes at all. Those processors can take the heat and stay stable, 50 degrees under full load is very good... I wouldnt worry unless your system is unstable.

But some things to worry about... : Hows your case cooling setup? Are you sure that your HS is making good contact with the CPU?...

I'd second the idea of getting an alpha 8045 w/ panaflo fan I have one and love it, my system is cool and quiet:D

At only 15c above ambient, your retail heatsink is doing pretty well. I would not recommend getting a new cpu heatsink. Your system temps are the problem here. Do you have any case fans? If so, where are they positioned and which way are they blowing? Also, what is your room temperature?

Ben50 makes a valid point.
suggest you can try running your system with the case open to see if temps drop!

Thanks for all the responses so far:D I left it as it was sent to me so no fan in front, 1 on top, 1 on the side, and the PS in back all blowing out, the HS fan is blowing onto the heatsink. Should I try to put one of the 2 fans in front blowing in and one in back blowing out (not sure if they will fit but I could try)???

Thanks again,
