cool flash mind reader: how does it work?

I found this fun flash game that "reads your mind".

the symbols that the numbers correspond with change each time you reload it, but I still can't figure out how it works exactly. can somebody explain the mathematics?

it turns out that no matter what you pick, the number is a multiple of 9. Then, notice that all multiples of 9 have the same (varying each time) symbol
