Cool Bugs!

Instead of doing work, I decided to trim the plants at home. Instead of trimming the plants, I took bug pictures! (Inspired by the great shots that Lirion has shared with us, but nowhere near as nice.)

This is just using the Oly C-720. No fancy schmancy lenses. Cute bugs--I believe they are some kind of hopper:
Hoppers 1
Hoppers 2

I plucked the biggest one off the twig--the height of the "little" fella is about 1 cm! Biggest hoppers I've ever seen. Now I have to kill them because they're sucking the juices out of my wife's favorite bush.

:frown:

edit: Better pictures now linked

Where do u people live? I have never seen these things IRL... I do sit on my ass alot but i also go outside and i ahve never seen these odd bugs that everyone has pictures of

Stare at a spot on the ground long enough, and you will find bugs.

They're leafhoppers or treehoppers. Distant relatives of cicadas ("locusts"). Very good jumpers--I put one on my arm and it hopped away, leaving quite a sting (and a small pool of insect pee).

I almost missed them because of the camouflage!

I avoid the shield bugs--Back during my school years, I stuck one in the freezer for a school project. Days later, I pinned it and it started wriggling after thawing! Tough sucker!

I'm in southwest Florida. Want me to mail them to you? 🙂 Might start a treehopper plague in Ohio . . .

Your profile says Florida. I'm really close to asking you to mail me some of these, but it's probably illegal. Lots of photographic potential with these guys.

LOL... Nobody has ever mailed anything illegal. Nope, never. 😉

I'd just be worried about them dying. You'd have to get them sent overnight..
