I know that this is basically throwing a beginner into the fire, but listen to Magnus' advice first. Then, get Bourdain's Les Halles cookbook. Find some recipes where you can actually get the ingredients and go. Follow the instructions. You will learn a lot along the way. You'll know you were successful if the food tastes good.

got any knife suggestions? i need to buy a new one.

Find something that works for you . Remember, it's hard to get a knife too large for the job but, it's easy to get one too small. Along with that, get a good sized cutting board, at least 24" x 18"

Get something 9 inch cheff's knife and a wood-block cutting board from bead bath and beyond.

Then up grade your hardware every time you find something you want to do that you can't without the new hardware... it's much like computers that way.

Stews. From Beef Stew to Chili to Pasta Sauces, they are a good place to start.
