Cooking dinner equal to eating out?

Ok, this is a silly question, but my bf and I "argue" over this... if I buy dinner material, and cook it, using a good hour+ of my time, and the food is enjoyable (I actually cook well sometimes), is that equal to him taking me out to an averaged priced dinner (eg, Chili's, Applebee's, around the $17-24 range for two incl tip)?

I think it is, and I cook dinner an awful lot sometimes, but then he claims that I never take him out. I do, but it's not as often as he takes me out, but then the money I would have spent on dinner out, I spend on food at the grocery store.

Oh, and we don't live together, we just eat dinner together 95% of the time.

I think having dinner made by someone you love is worth more than being taken out to a restaurant -- unless you are a horrible cook 😉.

I think a good home-cooked meal is much better. The food tends to be of better quality, and you enjoy it more when you're eating it b/c of all the time and effort it took in preparing it.

Am I the only one who sees something wrong with that? 😕

Dinner at my house (just wife and I) costs between $2 and $8 depending on the quality of the meal (I've kept track of every single penny we've spent for the last 3 years). If your time is worth $10/hour then I suppose you could argue that dinner at home costs you $12 - $18 when including your time. However, eating out also takes time driving and waiting so I don't think that is a good argument to make. Basically you are eating at expensive restaurants and you will probably save money at home.

What's up with him?? Girls taking guys out?? Afterall, I would love to have my gf make dinner for me all the time rather than eat out!

*smile* I'll make him read this thread 🙂

I don't mind cooking all the time, it's just that sometimes I'm way too tired to (I have classes and work and the gym from 10-12 hrs a day, not incl homework). Oh, and we usually don't go to expensive places, lately we've been spending around $12-15 if we go out at all.

And I don't mind taking him, out, it's just that I don't have a lot of money to.

Personally, I'd rather have my GF cook me dinner than eat out, except for one thing. When you go out to eat. you GO OUT. When you make him dinner, you STAY HOME.

He wants to go out to go out, ohe doesn't want to go out to eat 😉

/me slaps jjones around a bit with a large trout

😛

hehe, I mentioned that the other day, but he claims it's not so

I don't think they are equal. Eating at home is a more personal atmosphere, while eating out, you get to enjoy new scenery and people. Both can be romantic, but they are not the same.

My wife loves eating out as often as possible. I too enjoy eating out but we can only afford $1500/year on restaurants. I think on average we eat out four times each week leaving us with about a $7 budget for each meal. It is possible to do it. At Chili's and Applebee's neither of us could ever finish off a meal since the portions are gigantic. So we only order 1 meal and share (It is often more romantic that way). Coupons work wonders (a full meal at Subway is $3.09 + tax). Never eat at buffets since the food is lower quality and costs about double what you would spend without the buffet ($20 for two at Pizza Hut buffet or $12 for a large Pizza Hut pizza). My favorite trick though is to eat out for lunch instead of dinner. Most quality restaurants serve slightly smaller portions at lunch but charge only half as much (plus we could never finish a full dinner meal anyways at places like Chili's...)
