from what I understand, rc5 is cracking encrypted numbers - so correct me if I'm wrong.

so if I'm right, what's the purpose of cracking numbers? everyone seems so passionate about rc5 and I'm slowly being lifted up onto the bandwagon. but I don't see any point in rc5. on the other hand, I like seti because if we do find something, it'll more than likely benefit mankind. plus, I have a passion for astronomy so that's why I'm running seti: passion and a potential benefit for humanity.

as of now, I have dcypher, seti, entropia, and popular power. if there are any benefits of rc5, I'll add it to my list..so would anyone care to list the benefits for me? but before you do, don't mention the prize money, I'm not interested in that nor do I think I'll win. second, don't say something similiar to "you'll be helping team anandtech!" because I'm already on team anandtech for seti and dcypher.

also, are there any benefits for running ogr?

edit: and just in case ppl think I'm bashing rc5, I changed the title.

I just got a PM from michael and he made me realize that my post sounds like it's bashing rc5. I'm not - I even admitted that the devout rc5 crackers are starting to make me want to run rc5 myself.

but my purpose of running distributed programs such as seti and dcypher is that it can help civilization. from what you guys are saying, I don't doubt rc5 is fun and entertaining...but can it help ppl? if it can, then I'll use rc5.

Well, this might force the government to use a higher encryption standard, and reduce security issues for the people that use it. So yes... even in some small way, it might help people. Even though they don't realize it.

We?ve been under a lot of pressure lately? sorry for any possible flames (hopefully not).

No cure for cancer here, I suppose pointing out the inadequacy of 64 bit encryption will help protect people if it encourages the use of better encryption standards in commercial transactions, transmission of personal data, etc.

If you should ever find anything in Seti, Men-In-Black suits will probably kick your door down in the middle of the night, format your HD and whisk you away to Area 54, so you make the choice...:)

Yeah, thats another thing EmperorNero.

I like seti because if we do find something, it'll more than likely benefit mankind

What if we do find ET, and they distroy planet Earth. ;)

I can make the same argument about seti that you made about RC5. :)

The most compelling reason I can think of for joining is that you be will be part of history. In a month or so, we will be the number one team in the world.:D

As far as helping people, A large protion of the prize money goes to charity. I think $1000. for team, $1000. for wining cracker & $8000. for charity, so the sooner we crack it the sooner we can contibute to the charity.(hope my numbers are right couldnt find the link)
