This game looks pretty sweet and steam has a nice big sale going on. Should I bite? The reviews for the two DLC seem comparatively crappy though--either of these worth it?

And is the "digital deluxe edition" or any of the extra cars DLC worthwhile?

Thanks,
-Eric

For the price of feeding three starving children in Africa you could have hours of fun with Mafia II!

But should I pay the price of feeding 4 or even 5 starving children by buying the various DLC?

It's quite short and the later part of the game-world loses the atmosphere that made the beginning of the game interesting/engaging. The second criticism might just be my personal perspective so I suppose you ought to take with a grain of salt. That being said, the story is the strongest element of the game.

Also, unlike the original Mafia, the game is extremely linear. I seem to recall some reviews mentioning this problem was partially resolved in DLC but, as I haven't played any of the DLC, I can't comment on that.

It's not a bad game but never really hits the same highs of the original (or any other great game for that matter). As I mentioned, the story does a competent job executing the typical 1950-1970s American mafia story but I found the game world and gameplay so uninteresting that I eventually wound up youtubing the four or five of the final cut-scenes to see the end of the story.

It's not bad but there are some good recent and classic games that would probably be more enjoyable.

played through once

thats about it

story good, graphics pretty good, captures the real old school gangster feel and time period well.

really wish there was a multiplayer.

buy it for a good story but you might shelf it like i did after the first playthrough.

It's not my job to convince you. That's what the 1000s of reviews are for. If you can't spend a few minutes to see if a game is for you, then you obviously have no time to play it.

As people have mentioned, it has almost no replay value. I've never played the DLC but found the base game to be solid. While the gameplay doesn't stand out, the dialogue and story are what make the game.

Definitely worth a purchase, especially if it's on sale.

Cool, thanks to those who provided some useful feedback :) (And for those who didn't: chill the fuck out, jesus.) I ended up buying the game. I love mobster movies and GTA3 style games, so this should be enjoyable.

There will be alot of driving. I really hope they've made a longer game using all the environment they've created, but thats not the case. it is a rather short game.
But I did enjoy every minute of it. However there is 0 replay value.

I enjoyed it but only because the story/voice acting kept me engaged. Every mission felt too similar and off course like already said, the world doesn't feel open. I got it last year during a Steam sale so for around $10 it was worth it. I've spent more money on worse games. For the price it was there should be no reason to ask.
