Seventeen or Bust isn't an accurate measure of performance between Intel and AMD since it is SSE2 optimized. The P4's run faster because they support those instructions. As far as I know though most other programs don't support SSE2 instructions and therefore the AMD and Intel run on par with each other. I think I can safely say that most people will agree with me that AMD easily wins the price/performance ratio war.

From my understanding the program is not only optimized for SSE2, but Enhanced 3-DNow. If thats true than that arguement holds no water as it would support both equally as good.

I don't have much to help you with. I crunch DF on a mini-team. My AXP @ 1775 outcrunches one of my partners' P4 @ 2.4, but by VERY little.

I think you would be extremely pleased with either system.

If I were building a new system, I would really be torn between an AXP/NForce2 combo and a P4/E7205 combo. Push comes to shove, I would probably go P4 if I had the extra $$, because I would like to worry a little less about heat. Unless the $$ difference was more than $50.00.
If that were the case, I would happily build another AXP.

I have a new XP 2600 (333) and the heat at full load is 61 watts. This compares to an old XP 1800 at 87 watts.

Hhhmmmm....I wasn't aware of that. From what I've seen the two are equal in SOB MHz to MHz and not rating to MHz. In most other pograms though it is more the later than the former.

D²OL!! It helps find drugs to fight Anthrax, Ebola, and Small Pox!!! You'll need a lot of patience though, the Sengent people that run D²OL seem to not be able to run their project very well.

Folding@Home helps fight diseases (such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease), and the client doesn't require a lot of babysitting. :)

And if you want a project with similar goals but much less stress, then Find-a-Drug is perfect.

At $30 for a whole system (or even multiple systems), you can't beat the price! ;)

And electricity isn't cheap,
But, in this winter the heat helps.
Here in the long summers of SC the heat ain't helpful. (Getting the humidity out of the house makes a small pond in the back yard.)

Ya know, what they say the greatest general of the south was General Electric (GE) and airconditioning.
