Does anybody know how to convert video files like mpeg, into AVI files? and how to convert other formats into AVI? and if so are there any programs out there to do this with?

Do a search on download.cnet.com for "mpeg to avi" or something. I did it the other way around because .avi sucks ass and found several programs that work the other way around.

.avi files are very tough to play in anything other than Windows. Other than that suck ass "feature" they rock.

good grief....

AVI is only as good as the codec being used. If your avi is encoded with a low bitrate cinepak codec of course it will look like crap. But if it's encoded with 6/Mbit divx it will look great.

You can only convert those formats that are not closed formats, for example WMV, QT and RM are closed formats. DivX, Indeo AVI, MPEG1 and MPEG2 for example are open formats.

In other words any MPEG2 editor can read/open Divx, Indeo AVI, MPEG1 and 2 files but not open/read closed formats. You can render to these closed formats but once you do, you will need their proprietary software to re-edit them. In other words once you render a file from MPEG2 to QT for example, you will need a QT editor to re-edit them. That's why most people prefer open formats.

I'll give you an example, when I record TV with my AIW, it saves it to *.MPG file, which in this case is MPEG1. Since MPEG1 is an open format, I can then use Vegas Video or Video Factory and open that file into it. I can then edit or just leave it like it is, and then render it (save it as) a Windows Media Video v8 codec (which is a closed format). the result will be 'tvshow.wmv' that file is now a closed format. Once I save it in this format, I cannot open my Vegas Video or Video Factory editor to edit that file, the only program that will edit this file will be Microsoft's Movie Maker for WinXP which is the Windows Media Video v8 proprietary program to edit this video. If I do open it in Movie Maker I can edit it but I can then only save it as a Window Media Video file and not MPEG or DivX.

I hope this helped.
