Converting VHS to DVD on my PC

Nearly two years ago, I purchased an ATI All In Wonder 9700 Pro with the intent of boosting my gaming performance and transfering my family VHS tapes over to DVD.

The software that came with the Radeon was not particularly intuitive, the options were limited and the transfer quality was dark, distorted and terrible.

It is time for another upgrade, but this time I am going with a GEFORCE 6800 GT. My understanding is that in order to conduct video transfer from a VCR, I will need to purchase a seperate capture card. I do not think I can conduct the video transfer with my new card and the proper software alone. However I could be wrong.

Given my choice of the 6800 GT, what other hardware and particularly software would you recommend for conducting VHS to DVD transfers. I currently own a Plextor DVD+RW PX-504A drive.

No 6800GT has VIVO, so you are correct in that you need a capture device of some sort. I bought a Plextor Convert X, I've captured from my VCR with it and it was pretty easy. (and intuitive)

My X800XT PE has VIVO, but I'm going to use this thing anyway because it's easy and doesn't tie me to owning a VIVO card.

Any PCI TV card will do that for you. Buy one that does have an SVideo input, not just Composite, for better capture quality.

The rest is all software. That said, you might want to give ATi's current software a try. Things have improved ... Also, the Radeon's video-in hardware driver plugs into Windows's generic media input device architecture, so you're free to use any video capturing software you please, not just the one that comes with it.

I didnt realize that they had USB external solutions for video capture, although I will have plenty of free PCI slots should I choose to go that route.

I believe ATI makes dedicated PCI capture cards, and I would assume that either a PCI or USB capture device would come with dedicated software.

Is there any software solution that is perhaps preferred to those packaged with the Plextor or ATI capture devices, or has their software advance beyond what they offered two years ago such that I can achieve better results?

The ConvertX thing has SVideo in.

Are there any software solutions outside of those packaged with either the Plextor or ATI solutions that are perhaps more industry standard, professional or better suited for video capture...like I mentioned previously, I was not impressed with the software that came packaged with my RADEON 9700 All in Wonder Pro, although I admit that I have not had the opportunity to play with any software advances from ATI since I purchased that card.

i use pinnacle studio... a version of it comes bundled with 9800aiw; dunno what came with the 9700aiw tho...

this software received an "editor's choice" from pcmag: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,574600,00.asp (version 8; it's up to v9 now).
not sure your definaition of "insdustry standard", however I don't think you'll do much better unless you want to spend $500 and up to get professional quality software.

at any rate, it does everything i require and does it well.

The PCI way comes with the extra benefit that when you're VIEWING video or TV, the PCI card can push the video data over to the graphics card's overlay buffer without bothering the CPU or the system's main RAM. USB devices can't do that.
