Converting Real media?

I know about Real Alternative to play Real media files, but has anyone ever tried any of these to convert from Real media files? I'm not sure which require Real Player to be installed. And if they do, if it would work with only Real Alternative installed.

I found a program that converts them, but I heard the reason it was so hard to find software to convert was because Real legally said nobody could do it. Not sure why.
 
If you can play it in Windows Media Player, then you can convert it to WMA with Windows Media Encoder.
 
I have a similar question. does anyone know of a program that can rip real audio streams to mp3? I love "This American Life", but their archive is only in streamable real audio format on their website, and I really want to listen to it on my Iriver in the car.
