Can it be done??? Me stupid and bought this drive thinking I had an extra port. I have an HP734n and it did not come with an extra port for peripherals. WHY????!!!!! I read somewhere on here that a poster had converted a Plextor to external. How can this be done??? PLEASE be specific as I am not a computer genius. I am really excited about this burner and want to keep it. I just need to know if and how this can be done. Thank you.

What is your term of "extra port"? by that i'm assuming you mean an extra ide connector on the cable, and you only have 1 connector....get a cable that has 2 ide connectors.....and just to through out if thats the case, when you connect 2 devices on 1 cable.....each device must be setup as a master/slave.

My apologies as my terminology may not be correct. By port, I mean an extra empty slot to put the internal drive into.

Thank you Waitman. Anyone had success using these? Are there any downfalls??? Would it just be cheaper/more efficient to return this product and buy an external DVD burner? What is a good one?

HP Pavilion 734n PC is a minitower which is configured with an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ processor running at 2GHz, a 256KB on-die L2 cache, an 80GB Ultra DMA hard drive and 512MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM (expandable to 1GB). In addition to the 266MHz frontside bus, the Pavilion 734n features a 3.5" 1.44MB floppy drive, a 40x10x40 (max. record, rewrite and read speeds) CD-RW drive and a 16X (max. speed) DVD-ROM drive with MPEG-2 decoder for full-motion video. For your communications needs, there's a V.90/K56flex modem and an integrated 10/100 networking connection. Add more devices with the open PCI slot and the available 3.5" internal expansion bay. The nVidia GeForce4 MX420 graphics card with 64MB DDR memory and TV out delivers knockout visuals. You'll love the sound that comes through the Polk Audio Stereo Speakers. The Pavilion 734n comes with the HP Internet Command Center one-touch keyboard, an optical scroll mouse and front-mounted USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394 Firewire ports. Windows XP Home Edition is pre-installed.

You just need the enclosure.

One more inferior-like question... Is there a specific enclosure that I should get? There are a number on the link that was listed above. $$$ is not a concern. What do you suggest. I really appreciate all the help. Thank heavens I have a friend that is good with computers!!!

One more and that is it (I hope that this is helpful to someone else too!)... I have an internal CD burner that came with the computer. Hardly use it and the DVD burner can now handle that function. Would it be best just to take that out and replace it with the new DVD burner. My buddy told me that would be the way to go. Thank you in advance.
