Converting back to 3dfx? Opinions needed...

Hey, I wanted some opinions on what you think I should do. I presently have a GeForce 2 GTS and am thinking about switching back to 3dfx-based boards. All other 3dfx cards that I have owned were very compatible and provided great performance (In reference to the Voodoo Banshee and Voodoo 3). I presently own a Asus V7700 GTS and am mildly pleased. It was difficult to install, and gives terrible image quality, IMO. For these reasons, I am considering getting the Voodoo 5. What are your opinions on the subject?

NOTE: The new HSR drivers have really concreted my trust that 3dfx will stage a comeback.

I say if you can get at least 50$ more for you GeForce than you will pay fot the voodoo5 than go for it.

I say stick with the GTS and trouble shoot what problems you have with the Asus card.

I would definitely try fully to figure out what type of problems you have with the GTS first before switching

If you simply cannot stand the issues/problems anymore, go ahead and switch

the only time I regret giving up my highly overclockable GTS 64MB GTS for the 5500 is when I run a benchmark.

all I gotta do to remind myself why I switched is to play a variety of games. it all comes back to me quickly then

:)

and don't get too worked upa bout those HSR drivers just yet

they're still a work in progress

Thank you to everyone who replied. I think I am gonna go for it. I'm sell my Asus so I can get some better 2d, less problems and higher image quality. Just what I wanted. I've been reading through some of the *discussion* (More like arguments) about the GeForce 2 vs. V5 and it's clear to me that the V5 is a good choice to make.

Well I understand your point there. I have never been satisfied with the image quality of my GTS either. I would suggest a Voodoo5 or Radeon would be a much better choice for an all around card. You might try to fix the nagging problems you have with the GTS first, but if still no good than a change would be a smart move. It's amazing how many people have already dumped the GTS and moved to Radeon, and now people are moving to V5's too because of the price drop. After getting a lot of hands on experience with the Radeon and Voodoo5 lately, I've found them both to be much better overall cards than my GTS. Heck, I may be behind you in line pretty soon and making a switch myself. :)

Some of these posts just set off a light bulb for me.
The exception to the following is an actually defective card.
With 3dfx V5 5500, there is one choice, one card, every card identical.
With ATI Radeon, same thing.

With nVidia GeForce2 GTS on the other hand, there are many choices, many cards, not all are the same, except for speed. This would explain how there are many that love the card, and many that dislike the card. Point is, maybe some of you should not rule out nVidia, but think of a different brand of nVidia instead. If you are still open minded, ask around to the thousands of GeForce2 owners that have problem free, perfect quality, 100% hardware compatabilty, and see what they are using. Using here a Visiontek GrForce2 GTS 32 meg.

(flame suit on, as is required of all nVidia owners that like the card)

very good point indeed.

I must say that the people I hear bitching the most (it *seems*) are Creative Labs owners

of course, that could have something to do with the fact that Creative probably outsells all the other nvidia "manufacturers" combined.

Unfortunately, EVERYONE follows the reference design to a "t". nvidia requires this.

you won't get too much difference from card to card, past QC.

I have at the moment two ulta's gts, a herc gts a voodoo5500 and a clab mx ddr. I can honestly say that I found the 5500 to be no different to the others. the 5500 is a pci card so I tried dual monitors and still can see no difference between the 2d of all the cards. I would say keep hold of your current card and upgrade next year.

I jumped through all the hoops with my VIA KX133 mobo and nVidia. I just moved from a CL DDR and the ease of setup this time around was amazing. The V5 'plays' better with other hardware. I'm working on the FPS, but I must say 4 FSAA is sweet. For $150 a great deal.

mingon, you work at a hardware store, or do you OWN that stuff?

**edit**

just to address the "converting back to 3dfx?" concept.

A "convert" is typically one who "sees the light" in a religious sense.

You're not "converting", you're "buying a video card"

please note the difference. :)

Go for it. My next upgrade will either be a V4 or a V5.

"i have a gefarce 2 but it 5uX0r5! so i'm getting a v5"

where do you people get all your money!?!?

personally i think that new cards are coming out at the end of january. i'd like to think that i'll get one, since the geforce is now slow, but i don't really play 3D games much right now. maybe UO2, UO in 3D, and shadowbane will force me to get something with really good FSAA performance. monkey island... mech 4... alice... sooo many good games... this h4X0r3|) FSAA on this SDR geforce isn't very fast.

maybe it will get rid of my monitor's brown corner?

not true. Take a look at Canopus cards I believe elsas 64 Meger card is non reference as well.

Isnt the herc gts pro a non reference design as mentioned on this site?

to clear something up myself and at last 10 other people got elsa gts ultra cards for nothing but because we paid for shipping the web site involved had already taken the £2.50 it costs for an order under £40 and as such entered into a legally binding agreement. I have received 2 and have a further 3 on order which have not been shipped:D
