converting aspect ratio?

is it possible to convert aspect ratio when editing a movie? or is that not the issue?


i edited a team america clip and after publishing it from windows movie maker, the video comes out with the top stretched out and the bottom green.

so it's like this:

how might i resolve this issue?

Well, the bottom being green means something 'f'ed up during the encoding process. So I think aspect ratio should be the least of your worries.

What was your process? What type of file were the source videos? What settings did you use to encode?

all i did was magic dvd ripper and it ripped it to an AVI file. windows movie makers supports avi so i didnt think there would be a problem.

i have any dvd encoder, but im not sure how to use it or what to do.

It could be a folly with any of those programs you used, or codecs installed.

I see you're on Vista (I assume Home Premium or Ultimate). Use this utility to ensure that the built-in Microsoft mpeg-2 decoder is set to preferred.

My suggestion would be using DVDFab Decrypter to rip, rename the resulting .vob files to .mpg and load them directly in to Windows Movie Maker. Hopefully that works better.

One possible hiccup would be audio. You may have to extract the audio from the VOBs and load that seperately. Avidemux would probably let you do that.

ok well dvdfab does NOT work for me. i dont know, but it just wont. im encoding the video to .wmv on any video converter, but if that doesnt work i can encode it to whatever u recommended.


i think it's just the video. my friend says it's the aspect ratio though...whatever that means.

did you pay for dvdfab? regular dvd fab rips the raw files to drive perfectly fine. you don't rip to avi. avi is a container format. you use an encoder to transcode a file into mpeg 4 or whatever to cram into an avi.
paid version of dvdfab can do the extra step of transcoding.

Well, screwy aspect ratio would make the video squished...but the fact there's a huge green box occupying space where your video should be suggests that something happened during the encoding process and it's the video itself that is the problem.

yeah so i used the any video converter and tried changing it to mpeg2 and wmv but im still getting the same issue. when i choose properties though it still says avi...weird.


what can i do?!!

I have to do some testing with movie maker and VOB files when I get home. I'll let you know what I find. The whole process might end up being much easier than you're making it.

what are you doing?
just rip with dvdfab/anydvd or whatever then run it through handbrake to encode a divx/mpeg4 avi. then edit that.
what is your goal

my goal is to get rid of the green screen!!!

handbrake doesnt work for me.

Here's what I found:

- So long as whatever software you're using to rip gives you proper decrypted VOB files, you should be fine.
- Use the video decoder check utility I posted earlier to make sure the preferred mpeg-2 decoder is set to the built-in Microsoft one.
- You can directly import the vob file (drag and drop) into movie maker, no audio extraction or fuss required
- edit your movie and publish

...so yeah, you were making it way more complicated than necessary.

video decover did not work.

look, the video plays fine before publishing. no green thing is visible. it's 100%. but, after publishing..

yes the video played awesomely. converted directly to an avi.

You need to highlight that first codec in the list and set it to preferred. After you've done that try importing and using the VOB files directly in Movie Maker.

* My additional suggestion is to rid yourself of Roxio's crap software and use free burning alternatives (like Imgburn or CDBurnerXP or InfraRecorder, etc...) If this is a pre-built system try using a program called "PC Decrapifier"
