Ok I just convinced a friend of a friend from buying an iPod and told them to go to best buy (I know but at least they will be able to try it out) and check out the creative line of products/iRiver line of products to help them choose what feels best in their hand. I do not have a MP3 player but I know that these two brands are much better than the iPod. I have some quick questions I wanted clarified.
1. Does the creative line/iRiver line let you replace the battery (especially the rechargable ones)
2. Are you able to copy files off of the creative/iRiver line with ease unlike the iPod?
3. Can you access the iRiver/creative line like a USB key or do you have to use their software?

1) yes
2) yes and when you mean 'files' you don't mean mp3's right? You can get files (films, documents etc) fine off the iPod
3) yes

She is fairly ignorant and infact was apologizing over the phone continously about how ignorant she was so it's not like I was going to send her to frys.. And yes I meant MP3s, they're not easily removed from the iPod with out difficulty (burning/special program). Anyways the software sucks and crashes like a bitch.

Well if "friends don't let friends shop at bestbuy", then what should I do? Where should I tell her to go and try them out?

I would still get an ipod

by far the easiest and best interface

Sound quality is not the best but still is excellent (remember this is a portable mp3 player)

Itunes has the best organizing function and search of any mp3 player

if she is the type that likes to use Foobar, encode her own mp3s or encode in a lossless format etc., or needs the extra features than by all means get something else

I just want something that is small, easy, and works well and the ipod by no means is a bad player

That's an ignorrant statement.

I had an iPod and iRiver at the same time in order to compare the two.
The iPod is much better.
iRiver may have more bells and whistles but that doesn't make it better.
iPod felt better built (iRiver buttons slightly rattled), and was much easier to use,
but most importantly it did what it was supposed to do (be an Mp3 player) better than iRiver.
I don't care if my DAP is a USB drive or a radio or picture viewer etc...

I sold my iPod cause I got Sirius radio and didn't use it much anymore,
but if I was going to get a new player, it would probably be an iPod

I definitely agree you should try before you buy.

After she finds a model she likes, refer her to some Hot Deals sites which list Hot Deals on MP3 players.

ugh you don't know these basic things and yet you think you know enough to tell her to not get an ipod? you've wasted time forcing her buy what she didn't want in the first place for reasons she probably doesn't care about.

But getting the less mainstream player is cooler!

uhh you just assumed the ipod is junk because people tell you so? (you don't have an mp3 player) you're just as bad as the people who buy the ipod because it has white earbuds.

whatever makes her happy. and thats what matters. not what makes an alpha geek happy with his rather different criterial for buying something. ipod does what it does well, and its built with quality. she will feel her money is spent well on a device that looks good, not some second rate wanna be. i doubt she cares whether she can hax it:p

oh the mini ipods got longer battery life too and is SMALLER too.

No I referred her to another player because I have an ignorant sister who bought and iPod and it's utter shit. Just because I've never used anything else but an iPod, doesn't mean I'm not allowed to assume the iPod is shit. I know people who's iPods have broke after 4 months.

While most people have plenty of money to waste on an iPod and it's just another commodity, she doesn't. She saved up for this device so I don't want her to waste money on a device that will not last longer than a year. I want her to be able to replace the battery, I want her to have a device with a still working screen, I want her to be able to copy files back from the MP3 onto her computer agian.

I don't have an MP3 player at all because I think it's a waste of money. I mean a device JUST for playing ONLY mp3s! I mean at least the Zen micro has RADIO for christ sakes! Instead of using an MP3 player, I just use my phone to play all the music/video I want and its small.

when you have 4 gig's of mp3's, you probably won't want to listen to the radio. besides, the iriver is the most expensive of the bunch, and creative ain't much cheaper either.

if she's broke, then just grab any mp3 player that's SD expandable.
