Convert?

I upgraded to XP from 98 (SE) because I didn't know if I wanted to keep it or not.

Now I know I do.... While there are other reasons a clean install may be a good idea,

it is really gonna be a chore..... I want to take advantage of NTFS.....

any experiences you can pass along regarding using the CONVERT command to

change my partition type would be appreciated....

there really isnt much to it, 'convert /fs:NTFS' (which is funny because the only fs u can convert to is NTFS) .. ive used it before, it works, .. nothin too special about it .. good luck ..

I'm not sure about XP but in older versions of NT the convert command gave you 512 byte clusters, which makes disk access pretty slow. You may want to do a fresh install and format NTFS from there.

yep, I think a fresh install is gonna be best too....

I gave it a try and saw one wierdity right off the bat....

ZoneAlarm won't start automatically after the conversion? runs fine if I use the start menu

though?.... (I know there are a lot of threads in here about ZA, so I'll

poke around and see if I can figure out what that is all about)

We'll just slap in the FAT32 Ghost (actually already did) and mess

with this when I have more time (/boredom) available.

agree with neural and nothinman. the conversion is that simple, but it does tend to yield a slow-running ntfs filesystem. there was a benchtest in pcmagazine recently which showed the various xp performance speeds through different routes (i.e. clean install, upgrade from 98, upgrade from 2000, etc). a clean install yielded by far the fastest xp machine. just my .02
