uh.... okay so i understand this is supposed to be a joke... but still -- why would somebody that already has an mp3 player (ipod or not) -- even think about buying a second one in the first place?

Apple is marketing to people who dont have an mp3 player and wont spend money on the real ipod.(so that remark about 'saving money on buying a shuffle is just stupid becuase who would buy it if they alreayd have an ipod in the first place?)

... and at only 99 dollars they're doing a pretty good job at undercutting a lot of the other flash based players out there.

I think this was a great move by apple and i see it doing very well.

For demo purposes, I just picked this at random: 512MB, 25hrs of life, lcd display, voice recording, $99.

i dunno about horrible. the concept does make sense. people tend to use shuffle features on hd based players. u listen to maybe a few hours of shuffled music at a time, a small portionof the entire collection. if the flash based player just takes a random chunk of your collection every time u sync or whatnot.. ur basically doing the same thing you always do. well atleast for many people... it boils down the usage to the basics. the idea makes sense to me. the use for flash based is workouts and active use. most people do not want to sit down and work out playlists everytime they work out, they got better things to do. and well 99 bucks? hard to complain.

The whole point of buying an Apple product, especially an iPod, is so the user can brag to friends and family, and of course on the forums about it. Apple just came out w/ a new iPod, so they must have it before everybody else to show they're cool.

no one i know that has one "brags" about it. they get it because of its elegant design, the usability, the whole package. and its very easy to figure out why someone would get a shuffle when they have an ipod. maybe they don't want to lug a hd player around and risk breaking it when they are doing something active. 99bux is nothin, and if it breaks so what. not everyone in the world thinks like a geek u know.

done efficiently, you should be able to convert your ipod into 2 maybe 3 ipod shuffles.

1. Sell ipod for $200+
2. Take that money and buy new ipod shuffles.
3. Profit?

You misunderstood me. I know there's a market for flash based devices, I was just saying is that this compares poorly to other products in this market. Yet, its a brilliant move by Apple, because they know poeple WILL pay for a subpar product as long as it has the right brand.

still not really. look at what you linked. a button nightmare with cheesy cheap looking plastic case. all it has going for it is the lcd. look at how big it is. Dimensions 85mm x 32mm x 21mm = 57cm^3
the ipod shuffle is 17.5cm^3

over 3 times larger!!! yet the same price....

so the apple is not at all sub par.

I don't cosider size to usually mean better... sure smaller is better, but what if you want a specific song? I mean it is great for those who just shuffle, but for others, it is more of a bother.

well flash players generally are bought for specific purposes, like working out which don't make song selection all that important. that works for plenty of people. if you are one of those that always needs a specific song, then its not for you, that simple. but size does generally mean better, or harder to make/more expensive. so costing the same, yet being smaller is a good thing. esp for the purpose of a flash player.

The Shuffle is a great way to market a flash player with very little features so you can sell it at an inflated price.

I know someone who bought an iPod once - and then trades it in once a month under a no-questions-asked warranty for a newer unit (not sure where he buys them). Avoids failures. Avoids having an older unit. The store employees just roll their eyes at him now. He's been doing this SOLID since Gen1.
