what is the best free program to batch convert lots of wma files to mp3? how much quality loss should i expect?

Foobar2000 is great for mass conversion. Install it with CLI support for the diskwriter and you can convert anything to mp3 on the fly. You'll need to download the LAME mp3 encoder though.

I just converted 138 SPC (SNES sound files) to mp3 using foobar.
