Don't know if this was posted here yet, got it in an email, sounds pretty far fetched. I'm not a Republican or a Democrat, and don't really follow politics, but is any of the stuff in here true?

Conversation with a Republican

It?s getting close to election time again, and that means it?s time to get those annoying phone calls from the different parties trying to get you to go out and vote. Here?s a conversation I had today?

Me: Hello?

On the phone: Hi, this is Jim XXXXX from the Republican National Committee, how are you today?

Me: Fine.

Jim: I was just calling today to?

Me: Jim, I?m guessing you want me to get out and vote Republican.

Jim: Well yes, I?

Me: Jim, let me ask you a hypothetical question.

Jim: OK, but I?

Me: Jim, this is a hypothetical question, do you know what that means?

Jim: Yes.

Me: OK Jim, here goes. You somehow are able to see the future, and you find out that the world is going to end in one year. Doesn?t matter how it?s going to end, nuclear war, asteroid, whatever, but it?s the end of human civilization. It turns out that there is only one way to stop this, and that is to assassinate George Bush. Doesn?t matter whether it was his fault or not, but you know that ending his life would save the world. Would you do it?

Jim: I don?t see how?

Me: Simple yes or no hypothetical question Jim, doesn?t mean anything, I?m just trying to figure out if you are someone I can trust to talk to, so yes or no?

Jim: Well, I guess so, if it meant?

Me: So you would kill George Bush, in this purely hypothetical situation?

Jim: Yes, but?

Me: OK Jim, here?s the deal. As someone who I?m guessing knows a bit about politics, I?m sure you know that under George Bush, the government now has the power to listen in on any American?s phone conversation without their knowledge. The chances are pretty slim that they are listening in on this conversation, but from what I understand, they have computers that can listen in on millions of conversations at once, and pick out words like ?Bush?, and ?kill?. These words send up a red flag, and the conversation is automatically recorded. They could now have a record of you saying that you would kill George Bush. Also under George Bush, the government now has the ability to implement Marshall Law, send National Guardsmen to your house, kick down your door, and drag you off to an undisclosed location. They do not have to charge you with a crime, or even tell you why they are taking you, or where they are taking you. They can hold you indefinitely, which means you may never see your family again, and no one you know would ever know what happened to you. And lastly, under George Bush, the government can legally torture you while they have you locked up indefinitely. You do know that all of this is true, don?t you Jim?

Jim: The chances of something like that are?

Me: Yeah, the chances are pretty astronomical that it will happen to you, but under George Bush, it is possible, isn?t it?

Jim: (pause) But the fact that?

Me: Are you nervous Jim? You know it?s a one in a million chance, but are you sure no one is going to be listening to this conversation someday? Are you 100% sure you are safe now? Can you tell me of any Democrat president where any of these things were possible?

Jim: Well no, but?

Me: Jim, I think you better call your family and tell them you love them, because it may be a one in a million chance, but people hit the lottery every day, and the odds of that are higher than one in a million.

Jim: ?

Me: Jim? Are you ready to tell me why I should vote for a Republican this year?

Jim: ?

Me: OK Jim, it was nice talking to you, good luck with that whole abduction, torture thing.

Shens or not, still amusing. The Soviets made people disappear quietly in the night, and that was just within this past century. People think we're so far beyond doing anything like that. I look at things like war over the last few thousand years. Now we have great power and technology that could solve many of the world's serious problems, such as famine and poverty. Instead, we devote considerable resources to finding more efficient ways of killing people. If thousands of years won't cure our power and death lust, I don't think 100 years will do squat.

What a bunch of BS.

So, the whole thing about the wiretapping and marshells laws is completely untrue? I will say that under FDR we did have the whole japanese internment camps.

Um, what? You sure its fake? What in there was not factual? Maybe the conversation was fake, but the scenario played out is possible given new, um, "perspectives" by the neocons.

This is hilarious, but the fact remains that we have broken the laws protecting us from our government.

My only contention in what was said or I guess may have been said to the poor telemarketer is that it's now possible to listen in on that conversation.

Echelon was first turned on US citizens under Clinton. Long before 9/11.

Bush just made it legal.

Democrat = Republican

Same sh!t different aroma.

Only wish I could, I have been getting calls all week from the local republican party, however they are all lame prerecorded messages from various candidates whom I didn't vote for :)

New rule. You can't complain about Martial Law until you can spell it.

Really? I seem to remember MANY many fwd: fwd: fwd: style emails from the loyal righties here posted several times with nary a lock in sight. I think this is simply more evidence of your collective selective memory, like when Bill O'Reilly was attacking John Kerry for being "too negative" in the 2004 elections and Bill said, quote, "I can't remember Bush doing anything like that".

it seems like a bogus story, but the point is well made...as the supposed threat to our country escalates we will get more paranoid and more extreme monitoring techniques could be implemented..are you saying you have no fear of this whatsoever?

I don't know if it's a real phone conversation or not, I was just trying to see whether there was any truth to the stuf about phone tapping, martial law, torture, etc. It doesn't look like anyone is calling this stuff BS, even the obvious Bush supporters. I'm not into politics at all, but if this stuff is all true, why would you WANT to be a Bush supporter (not to say the other side is any better).

What difference does it make if you're a Bush supporter or not? GWB isn't running for re-selection folks.
