Controlling an mp3/movie box from remote location?

I am thinking of hooking a box up to a tv in my entertainment room, I was thinking it would be a PII 300 that I have laying around with a Radeon 7500, and as much memory as I have laying around also. It would be used to play mp3's and watch DivX. Is this a powerful enough system to run what I want it to do.

My other question is I would like to change songs from another computer in another room. So when we are having a party we can hide away the keyboard and mouse and still change songs and what not. Is this possible? What do I need?

I am pretty sure about this one but I'll ask anyway. I can set up Windows so it is somewhat readable being displayed just on a TV right? So we can pick songs and stuff without having to strain our eyes.

1. there are keyboards out there that you can set up certain buttons to change tracks in music programs like winamp... they are relatively cheap and you could even get a wireless one (then you just have a keyboard out). next if you were going to show your divx movies through the tv you would already have some type of video feed set up for it and you could just flip to the input channel when you wanted to do it so you could see
2. now for controlling it from another computer the best way i can think of is to have the 2 networked and then buy a program that litterally allows you to control the other computer remotely (they have these and you can see the computer's screen and completely control it from that other computer just like you were there)

these are just the ideas that i could think of
i hope maybe they help you or give you an idea of something to do...

I use software called Snow Crash to control winamp over the network - it works great, but you can't control anything else.

Will the software that is recommended run with XP? I would like to run XP on the two boxes. It doesn't look like VNC is compatible with XP or at least on their sight the don't list it.

WinXP has a built-in "Remote Desktop" capability that is accessible via a web page (http://xpbox/tsweb/) or through a separate app (on XP CD or downloadable from MS). It is nearly as functional as VNC for most purposes. You will need to have Terminal Services installed and running on the XP "media" box.

I am searching for a Windows equivalent to the Linux-based MP3 Server Box that I currently run on my weak media PC (P-166MMX, but, hey. it's Linux!). Once I upgrade the box, I'll probably use Edna to play locally and stream across the 'net. Again, edna works well enough on the Linux side of my P166. If they/I add a search capability to edna, I may use it exclusively.

There are a few other ways out there. Searching on "MP3 jukebox" should give you something.
