Decided to play this game on the PC so i would have better graphics. Im only about an hour into the game, but im just not a keyboard and mouse player, especially for a game like this.

I need the "lay back" experience and you just cant get that with the keyboard.

Is there a way to get it working in the PC version? Ill do what i have to to be able to use my gamepad.

Also how is the support for ME2? I want to play that next since i want to play both before 3 comes out.

Worst case scenario is that i have to spend another 20 to buy the 360 version :(

I forget whether it works for ME1, but ME2 works fine with a modded config file. However there is one exception, the pause menu is borked using the 360 pad, this can be pretty serious if you're not familiar with the game or you're playing on a hard difficulty which requires frequent pausing to issue squad orders.

damn, looks like im gonna have to play it on 360 :(

Im sure its fine for most people, but at this point i dont have the patience to get acquainted with keyboard and mouse for most games.

I have played a few games with keyboard and mouse in the past (diablo 2, some FPS games, strategy, Portal) but i like to sit back and relax when i play.

How hard is the learning curve on a game like this? For a person who has such little experience with keybpoard and mouse. Its not moving around and shooting that I have a huge problem with, but all the other buttons that i constantly forget what does what and where it is on the keyboard while im playing :/

Most games of this type, both first person and third person, tend to use the same WASD movement controls, with other important controls situated near those keys for easy access. It is actually quite confortable as your arms stay near perpendicular to each other. As you become more confortable with the keyboard muscle memory will take over and it will become extremely efficient at it. Just as your fingers know where the buttons are on a controller, the same applies here.

I recommend you keep at it because once you become good at it you will begin to see how crude a game controller can be compared to the keyboard and mouse. I'm not saying that a good player can't do well with a controller but that the mouse can give you much more precision at the same effort level.

I always played games on the pc, so always used mouse and keyboard. Did not play ME 1 but in ME 2 and other pc games, you can assign which keys you want to use. I prefer using the right side of the keyboard, using up/down and left/right arrows for movement, enter for use etc. This is just a personal preference...never liked using wasd keys.

I can't predict how long it'll take you to get use to the mouse/keyboard setup. I would recommend it though if you plan on pc gaming since the setup (WASD to move, mouse to look) is very intuitive and is implemented in almost all pc games (fps/rpg games anyway).

The other buttons don't take long to learn. IIRC, the main buttons in ME are

E- Interact
Shift- Run
Space - Pause combat and bring up menu
F1-F4 - Weapons
F- First aid
G- Grenade
I- Inventory

Basically, all the ones you'll be using in combat are around the WASD keys so they're pretty easy to remember and access. Once you get a handle on it they become second nature.

Just a quick note; in ME2 the space bar is used to run/interact whereas the shift key is used to bring up the pause menu. You might want to switch the two in ME1 so you don't have to relearn it in ME2.

I think basic moving and things like that arent that bad, but running, crouching, hiding behind walls, switching weapons, accidentaly healing, are things that screw me up. I died at the first somewhat difficult battle when your chasing the arbitor like guy who kills the other arbitor (cant remember their real names)

I just dont know if its even worth it for me to learn it. I prefer the controller, and i dont think that thats gonna change. At this point with the whole "games for windows" branding, i think its just lazy not to build in controller support.

The position im in, my hand cramps up pretty bad.

Im gonna go search for a way to get my controller working.

The graphics are actually better on 360 for Mass Effect 1, ME1 is a terrible port to pc and loses the rich, vibrant colors of the 360 version. A shame, considering the 360 version is a stuttering, screen-tearing, low framerate mess of a game due to the obvious hardware limitations. Not to mention slow loading times...

The PC version is better, it's just the colors which are screwed up badly. Oh, and Garrus's face has very low quality textures (bug that was never fixed) on the PC version. Though that's fixable if you own ME2 via a mod that imports Garrus's ME2 face into ME1.

Anyone have experience with pinnacle for controller support? I really don't wanna start over on 360.

I downloaded someones unofficial mod to get it working, and it didn't work at all.

Just downloaded it for 360 in the marketplace. For a long game like this i need controller support.

I really hope by the time i finish 1 and 2 they add controller support on the pc. Did they ever add it to mw3 btw?

Also on a side note. Which decisions affect my character? I'm blowing through the beginning this time, and i don't wanna sit there and ask as many questions and stuff as last time.

They're not going to add controller support for any of the games on the PC:

The biggest effects on the story for ME1 are probably paragon/renegade, who if anyone you romance and the decision you make on Virmire. The spoiler info of what carries over to ME2 is at:

Could it be that theyll eventually release a patch or update that supports it? Or will someone come out with their own that works 100%? I can already see how the PC version looks better in ME1, i can only imagine the differences in ME2 and 3.

I was concerned about my decisions because of little things in the first hour of the game. I didn't "investigate" as much and the guy who was stealing weapons didn't give me any this time.

Due to the age of the games there's no chance bioware will patch them again. For the same reason, the 3rd party mods to allow a controller are also done. Whatever is out there now is it.

If you have enough paragon/renegade points you will sometimes get an extra option in conversations. This really doesn't affect the story though, it'll either give you an item or make things a bit easier. All of the big decisions aren't affected by your paragon/renegade score.

Sorry I was referring to ME3. The article says they didnt put support in ME3 because they didnt have enough resources (BS). So im thinking if enough people complain, theyll add it? I know im going to play ME1 on 360, and probably ME2, but since ME3 is the newest and is going to look way better than the 360 version, i hope by the time i get there, support will be added.

What do you think?

Since they didn't add controller support to the previous 2 games I highly doubt they'll add it to the third. Also, I don't think there's a way to transfer your character from ME on the 360 to the pc. You're going to want to continue playing with the same character since the decisions you make do affect the later games. So it seems you're stuck with the 360 versions.
