I purchased a HP envy laptop 2 weeks ago with windows 7 installed. I upgraded to windows 8 last week. the first few days everything was working fine but since about 2 days ago the control keys stopped working (ie. don't copy, paste, find etc.)

I haven't spilt anything on the keyboard and the problem is with both keys. could keyboard settings etc. have been changed automatically by another program?

any advice appreciated.

Have you tried in safe mode? If its not working in safe mode then maybe something is wrong with the ctrl key

Your machine is new and under warranty. Call HP's toll free tech support line for assistance. If you purchased the Win 8 upgrade through HP, they may have similar reports and an answer. In any case, they should be able to help you.

Also, you may still be within the return period, which it typically 2 weeks to 30 days, depending on where you bought. If so, you can it take it back to the store for an exchange or refund.

Finally, you can save any data/files you'ed entered and use the recovery partition to return the machine to its out of box new state and try again. If that works correcctly, you can opt to stay with Win 7 or try the "upgrade" to Win 8 again.
