As I see it we have two types of context switching (by the OS and by the CPU).
I have not found much info about the cost of it.
Certainly you win much with it. Very few of us would like to go back to DOS or any 32 bit version of DOS.
I have found some info about Pentium 4 and context switching but later CPUs should be much better regarding cost. Regarding CPUs have you tested Core i3 or Core i7 regarding HT on and off?
Some single thread benchmarks run better on Core i3 without HT.
Regarding OS have you compared Linux with Windows?
