I have no idea, I used phpNuke for a total of 1 day before I scrapped it. Never used php-platinum... just set them both up and see which one you like better.

Might want to try out Mambo.

Also, if your host has Fantastico, these are the scripts it can install for you in a matter of 2-3 clicks!

Content Management
Drupal
Geeklog
Mambo Open Source
phpWCMS
phpWebSite
Post-Nuke
Siteframe
Typo3
Xoops

Taken directly from: [/b]http://www.cernax.com/fantastico.html[/b]

:)

PHP Nuke = Terrible security, poor management options and although there is a huge array of modules out for it, the code management is all over the place.

I was a postnuke user for my sites for about 12 months and its solid, but ultimately pretty dull... if you think phpnuke sites all look the same... well postnuke is even worse!

Then I discovered Mambo and it truely is the best out there by a long long way. Its incredibly well documented, the management side is simply awesome, and there is so much flexibilty in terms of modules and appearance I see very few look the same!!! Its absolutely fantastic and I cant see myself using anything else in future. I would pay a few hundred £'s for it but its totally free :) (it won some uber award at the last open source awards thingy recently too)

I am developing a few new sites at the moment with custom themes and designs but here is 2 sites with the default themes to give you a taster of what can be up and running in the blink of an eye

Quick and dirty family portal

Beginnings of an ecommerce site

Seriously you wont look back

i think i will try mambo, i installed php-nuke platinum and there is a ton of stuff, but it is extremely slow. i am running the server on my home machine (xp2000 / xp pro / 512MB / apache 2.0.5.x / php 4.3.xx / mysql 4.1.x) and i had both the bandwidth meter up and also the task manager - neither one showed much usage but you would have expected the cpu to be maxed out. soooooo slow.

how do you like the forum in mambo? can you have it for administrator sign up meaning me as the admin has to "ok" people to sign up?

Yeah PHP nuke is generally so slow precisely because of what I said above in terms of the code management being all over the place. The API for it all over the shop and then every module writer seems to just hack together what works rather than working to the defined API's and writing efficient code.

There are a few forum options for mambo, but simpleboard is the 1st I tried and I havent needed to look at any of the others. It has everything, is fully integrated, fully featured and is very efficient. And yes you can set up admin approval for new members.

BTW two points I wasnt aware of when I started with mambo - most CMS would call a component (like the forums) a module and a display funtion would be a block. In mambo a component is called a component and a display funtion is a module. Bit confusing if you are used to soemthing like postnuke.

Secondly everything you need in terms of templates/components/modules/documentation can be Found Here

There is also a specific documentation site HERE with manuals, tutorials and forums

thanks, installed it and all is working nicely. i will probably use mambo without a members area, just all public and have a link to the phpbb that i already have and require that i verify the people trying to create accounts. so far, very efficient and quick, very nice. thanks for your assistance :)

Mambo Mambo Mambo. Seriously. I've used PostNuke for almost a year on a fairly big site and it's a pain. I'm now working on a new site with Mambo and the difference is incredible. Using postnuke you will see hacks and chops all over. Using mambo you feel like you pirated some $$$$$ software that you should be paying for.

I rather like geeklog, but I've never tried to use forums with it. I think there's a plug-in for them though.
