Contemplating Building an upgradeable computer around Radeon 5770 (need chip, MB)

Hi I just bought (havent received yet) SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100283VX-2L Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ Eyefinity

and here are my basic current computer specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 2.93 GHZ
MSI MS-7235 p965 Neo
OCZ 4gb DDR2 PC2 6400 800 Dual Channel
500watt power supply

I am wondering will this computer run it nicely or is it time to upgrade the board and chip and if so which board and chip can I at least get all of the features of the card out of but still leaving room for future upgrades? I don't need anything over the top. But just something affordable that takes advantage of the card. Or is my current set up going to be fine even without the PCIE2 slot? Is it worth upgrading the board if I dont plan on running crossfire? If some of this doesnt make sense sorry just trying to find out what to buy if it were you and you just bought that card and wanted to get your best value for it... If this card is to beefy for my system that wouldnt make to much sense to not upgrade.

Please any suggestions or help 🙂

You system is just fine for that card. Pci-e 2.0 slot will make no difference, your 5770card cannot even saturate pci-e 1.0. You good to go buddy, game on.🙂

The only problem I can forsee is the lack compatibility with your motherboard, which dosen't happen often. Make sure you have the latest bios, chipset drivers installed for your motherboard, just in case. If you do have any problems get back to us.

Good luck,
And welcome to the forums.

awesome, thanks I thought I may be alright. Im having the x6800 actually installed bios flashed this weekend so ill update dude on my new vid card and to make sure it's all up to snuff.

More good news , I just looked up you motherbaord and I don't see anyone with a compatibilty issue with that card.

I reccomend you look for a compatable quad core to put in your P965 board if you need more gaming peformance. You could also try overclocking your current processor.

His options are going to be limited to a q660, q6700 I believe. I think he can get by till the new sockets come out mid next year. At the very least prices will be much cheaper for this years i7/i5/ Phenom sockets.

Edit: I was wrong, no quad core support for his board.
